Biography
Occasional Mustache was founded in early 2011, but the true seeds that blossomed into the "stash" began a decade earlier, when musicians Chad "Chancho" Schmid and Kurt "Ku Dog" Lindgren found themselves working together as wild land firefighters in a remote location in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Long shifts of running chainsaws and piling brush gave inspiration to songwriting and guitar pickin' in the post-work hours. This synthesis of work and play, business and pleasure, would become the trademark of the songwriters' sound, as the duo cultivated a cache of songs together which began with the Wadsworth Bluff Rats. The "Bluffrats" formed in 2008 when Schmid and Lindgren hooked up with Jordan Martin (drums), Dominic Ranaletti (guitars), and Karl Von Kries (flute, percussion, vocals) in Pismo Beach, California. The group played occasional shows around the central coast and valley for a couple of years and began recording an albumin 2009 at Karl Von Kries's studio in Grover Beach, California. The album was completed in summer of 2011 , but by that time the original line up had disbanded. Lindgren and Schmid had continued their song writing and in late 2011 decided to move forward as Occassional Mustache. An accomplished central coast drummer named Wyatt Lund (Truth About Seafood) collaborated with the duo and began recording an album in Porterville, California at Soundgarden Studio. Originally conceived as a 2nd Bluffrats album, the sessions lacked Von Kries and Ranaletti, and would take a huge turn when Lindgren's uncle, guitarist John Goux, entered the picture and offered his creative talents to the project. Goux's resume as a professional musican reads like a who's who across the spectrum of popular music in the last 30 years, having worked with such recording giants as Dolly Parton, Ray Charles, Lady Gaga, and and Christina Aguilera. Goux's midas touch transcends that of a mere guitar player, as arranger and producer could also be added to his contributions on slide guitar, mandolin, and more. The result is a unique blend of the raw and the polished, in an album that spans the emotional and melodic spectrum. Along with Goux, Drummer Ron Sloan (Don't Mean Maybe) was added in 2012.
