It's a real pleasure to welcome highly respected and experienced musical selector, DJ, radio host and curator Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy (@colleen-cosmo-murphy) with a special 'audio yoga mix' to our series. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hi Colleen, thanks for sharing your thoughts and music with us. Hosting your weekly online radio shows, making plenty mixes for several outlets, DJing clubs and festivals... How do you keep motivated and inspired?

CM: Sharing music has been focal to my life since I was a teenager hosting shows on our 10-watt high school radio station and working in a record shop after school. Turning people onto new tunes and artists gives me immense joy and courses throughout every aspect of my vocation. I’m a communicator at heart. That’s balanced with the more internalized creativity of music productions and remixes. Being in the studio and playing with ideas and sounds is very focusing and the rest of the world seems to fall away. It’s therapeutic. And playing records as a DJ or musical host is like a lively musical conversation in which I draw energy from the dancers and give it back in turn. A great party is a collective creation. Throughout all of my endeavours I try to impart the life energy of music, a healing and motivational force that inspires me every day.

MFM: In a time and place where the context of a DJ seems to have changed over decades, do you feel your “classic” approach of DJing gives you an advantage in keeping relevant and reaching a crowd?

CM: It's important to have your own point of difference. I have never been a ‘cookie-cutter’ type DJ and used to struggle with the idea that I didn’t fit in. But then I recognized that all the different aspects of my vocation had one thing in common – myself. Once I integrated everything and became more holistic in my approach, I felt happier and more confident. Being authentic to oneself is first and foremost and then it is up to others to decide whether or not they like your creative output. You can’t please everybody, but you have to try to please yourself otherwise there is no point. I get immense pleasure in what I do and hope that it brings joy to others. I do have a classic approach to DJ-ing but I’m also always looking for new sounds that resonate. I also admire other DJs styles even if it’s quite different to my own. There’s room for everyone.

MFM: You're a DJ who encourages the listener to open up and really listen to music, its definitions, context and aesthetics. Probably one of the foremost reasons why you tend to let a song run from beginning till end. With such strong values, what's your view on the modern way of “consuming” music?

CM: There are many different ways to enjoy music and none are the wrong way. Any experience of music is good. When I started Classic Album Sundays in 2010, it was a response to music only being ‘consumed’ rather than experienced and I wanted to share the way the I often listen to music with others to provide an alternative. At that time, we were in the midst of shuffle culture and the almighty MP3 and whilst both have their place, it shouldn’t be the end-all experience. When people come to a Classic Album Sundays event and hear the subtleties and nuances of an entire album played without interruption, on one of the world’s best sound systems and in a communal setting, they experience music in a different way and most find it transformative. But listening to music in a car or dancing to a DJ who scratches and cuts up songs can also be inspirational. I can only try to offer what is authentic from me.

MFM Mix 045: Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy

When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. Full send.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. A return to a classic for this edit but using a less familiar unreleased demo mix as the basis. 'Love Honey, Love Heartache' is most definitely one of my favourite Larry Levan productions and the demo version for me is best. This edit re-arranges, teases and heightens the raw electronic funk of the original, whilst hopefully staying true to the spirit of Larry Levan's vision.

A quick mention for the 12" of JKriv & Lou Teti's gem 'Elisco' which includes my remix and has been available for a few days at Juno (where it's already in the top 10 of the disco chart) and today has become more widely available at places such as Piccadilly Records. The twelve includes the original mix as well as other cracking remixes by Alphabet City & Sleazy McQueen. If you haven't picked up a copy yet, grab it while you can as it's a very limited run.

Tom & Ed met in history class at Manchester University in 1988. They started off as DJs known as "The 237 Turbo Nutters" (named after the number of their house on Dickenson Road in Manchester and a reference to their Blackburn raving days). They then opted for "The Dust Brothers" which they nicked from the L.A. producers of "Pauls Boutique" (as they thought they would never be famous). In 1995 they changed their name to "The Chemical Brothers" after the real Dust Brothers threatened to sue.
