Background:
This song was taught to me by a dear friend, "Auntie", and Ceremonial Wisdom Keeper. A water pourer in the Inipi lineage, she was a beautiful teacher to me. The Cherokee Water Song was taught to her by a group of Cherokee women while wading in the water. 

This song was the first of many Water songs that have come into my care. To me, it is a song of blessing and gratitude to the Waters of our World. Water is life, and I sing Water Songs to honor Her Spirit, Her gift of Life to us, and for Ceremonial Prayers with Water.

Ceremonial Context:
This song, traditionally Cherokee but also sung in some Dene' & Lakota lineages, is a North American Native Chant.

It is traditionally sung to praise the waters, and carries with it an upbeat vibration that invites others to chant along. Because of it's simplicity it is an excellent ceremonial tool to invoke a group chanting experience. People simply tend to chime in, which allows for the ceremonial container to be fed with EVERYONE's energy, not just one medicine singer.

In the ways that I have heard it sung, in Native Ceremony, it is sung 4 times (4 directions), but may also be sung 5,7, or however many times it feels appropriate for the energy of the ceremony.
