With what was mostly a full and fruitful year for us with many beautiful moments, we now turn our eyes forward to what is looking to be a very exciting year for us at Phonica as we walk into our 20th year of being alive. 2022 saw our mix series get even more killer contributions from artists like Paramida, Sally C, Fred P, Eden Burns, Alex Kassian, Erol Alkan and more. 2023's series line up plans to keep moving up and we have opened this years mix season in the capable hands of two of the finest DJ/Producers doing it right now. Bringing nothing but powerful, euphoric and goddess energies it can only be Octo Octa and Eris Drew of T4T Luv NRG. Amazingly celebrated for their strand of psychedelic, rolling progressive, trancey-house and break rhythms we can't think of two better selector's to take on our series. With an excellently curated compilation and mix for our good friends at Fabric last year as well as two banging cassettes on T4T we can't begin to imagine what this year has in-store for Maya and Eris but we have no doubt it's even more on the upward trajectory! Most likely to the heavens and back! We had a chat with Maya and Eris to see what they have been up to lately and little about how they approached the mix.

When DJs and producers @eris-drew and @octoocta first met, they felt an instant connection that has only grown over the years. Kindred spirits in both music and life, the pair released their first split EP entitled Devotion in 2018, sharing the same artistic values that make their music deeply moving in all senses of the word. Their DJ sets, meanwhile, light up the dancefloor — their back to backs can be as bombastic and high-energy as they are personal and emotive, speaking to a healing force that seems to drive all of their work. 

In this episode, we discuss their b2bs, their joint tour and label, @T4TLUVNRG, and their collaborative project Alchemical Sisters — the latest addition to a cosmic world in full colour.

Ah, a sonic journey through a fetid bog, a place where the very air hangs thick with the stench of decay, and the waters ripple with unseen terrors beneath. To embark on such an auditory odyssey would be to traverse realms both terrestrial and cosmic, where time itself warps in the heavy, damp embrace of nature’s most primal, eldritch haunt.

The journey begins with low, guttural drones—a chorus of distant, throbbing vibrations emanating from the depths of the bog, as if the earth itself groans under the weight of ancient things buried beneath. The first hour is a slow, creeping immersion into the environment: squelching, organic sounds of thick mud underfoot, the occasional splash of something unseen breaching the water’s surface, perhaps to glimpse the trespasser into its forgotten domain.

As you progress further, the second hour grows more unsettling. The sounds shift subtly, intertwining with an otherworldly pulse, as if the bog itself has become a living entity, aware of your presence. The chirping of insects becomes rhythmic, ritualistic—a dark and alien symphony. Wind whistles through dead trees like the whispers of long-dead voices, beckoning, warning. Faint echoes of chimes drift in from an unknown source, too unnatural to belong to this world.

By the third hour, you’ve entered a place that feels no longer of this earth. The sounds are distorted, dissonant, and eerie—like the howling of distant planets or the murmurs of beings beyond comprehension. Deep, resonant tones rise and fall like the breath of a vast, sleeping creature hidden beneath the bog's black waters. A growing tension pulses in the air, as if something is watching, waiting for you to cross some invisible threshold where mortal comprehension ends and madness begins.

And then—sudden silence. The journey concludes as it began, with nothing but the faintest trace of sound on the periphery of your hearing. You have been changed by what you have heard, touched by something ancient, unknowable.

Would you dare to listen, knowing that what you find in those depths may forever haunt your mind?

Whether under his Dream Weapons or Fantastikoi Hxoi aliases or more his more extensive output as https://soundcloud.com/anatolianweapons, Aggelos’ output is one to get lost in, where each project feels like a conversation between worlds that don’t usually meet. With Anatolian Weapons, that conversation comes into sharper focus: what began as an experiment in bridging the sharper edges of EBM and krautrock with the circular, percussive energy of Greek folk music has turned into a fully formed and consistent thread through his output of EPs and albums.

His first full-length as Anatolian Weapons arrived via the legendary Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space label back in 2019 - a move that pulled ancient melodies into unfamiliar territory and a statement piece at the time. Fast forward to 2024’s Beyond, and that sense of push and pull is still present, only now with more intent and confidence. It’s music that leans into repetition and rhythm without losing sight of where it came from.

Aggelos’ isolatedmix feels like a natural continuation. There’s no strict mood or genre at play, but rather a slow reveal, drawing on the same tensions and textures that have defined Baltas’ path so far. It’s a pleasure to have him contribute with such a dreamy trip through the many facets of his influences.

Coming at you direct from the Little “T” LUV NRG Soundsystem truck radio! All the galloping and rolling late 90s tech step and proto-neurofunk that Octo Octa and Faited blast out of a tiny bluetooth speaker inside the cab of an Isuzu NPR HD.

This set was played live at Envelope Soundsytem’s 2024 Ēostre ritual deep in the redwood forest within the Oakland, CA hills. The intention behind this ritual: 

“Ēostre marks a period of rejoining with queer family and community, and of setting intentions towards the approaching sun-drenched days. We celebrate this ritual to conjure the collective dream, and to see the fractal paths toward our individual dream’s first concrete forms. But dreaming alone can not dispel living nightmares—we must speak our dreams aloud and act towards them in anger. Come, you and yours, come weave your hopes with ours.”

RA.1000 launches with Theo Parrish, live at fabric: a vanishingly rare club mix from the king of deep crates and impossible transitions.

There are DJ sets and then there are Theo sets. No matter how many times you've caught him in action, every time still feels like the first. Running hot, levels smoking, isolator working over time. You think you know dance music? Think again.

Parrish's long-awaited debut on the RA Podcast is a milestone for the series, one we've sought for over 15 years. So it was only right that Theo led off our 1000th celebrations, the first of ten mixes this week. Recorded live at fabric last December as part of RA's collaborative party with the London club for their 25th anniversary, this three-hour segment documents the crescendo of his eight-hour marathon. 

The Detroit legend doesn't release mixes often, and when he does, they're usually studio recordings: think NTS shows, his 100% Detroit edition of DJ-Kicks or classic tapes Body (1997) and Methods of Movement (2020). A capture of the Sound Signature boss on the dancefloor is hard to come back. On RA.1000, you'll hear Theo in his element.

Sure, there's galvanising build-ups and crowd-pleasers, but laced throughout a Parrish beatdown are rarities designed to shock the system. In a business dominated by image-driven marketing, the vinyl master towers above thanks to a relentless hunger for lustrous melodies, moods and textures of all stripes, which he and he alone can fold into an inspiring and exhilarating joyride.

On RA.1000, blissful reggae precedes new wave disco; '80s R&B morphs into synthy techno; bleepy Chicago jack makes way for a poignant vocal ballad. Theo, once again, proves that anything and everything is possible with the right records.

Matt Emery is a pianist, composer and string arranger based in London and Surrey whose music spans across modern classical to minimalism and ambient. His debut album Empire has just been released on Injazero Records and see's Emery pull his haunting compositions into a long-player that boasts a coherent mood and sound.
