“Tenderness” is the first collaborative album between Japanese musician Yumi Iwaki and Brazilian Carlos Ferreira using unreleased sketches, improvisations, and samples, “Tenderness” is a mosaic of painted sounds that does not end in itself, inviting the listener to inhabit its center.

Porto Alegre based experimental guitarist Carlos Ferreira and Tokyo-based synthesizer hypnotist Yumi Iwaki are presenting "Tenderness" , their first ever collaborative album through Modern Obscure Music. Carlos and Yumi have created this powerful ambient odyssey at the distance. Despite some connections between Yumi's family roots with the Brazilian musical scene, both artists feel a strong attraction about their cultural differences, through Literature, films, scents, colors, and nature… Carlos feels “there are infinite cultural differences between Japan and Brazil, and this can be explained by historical and even geographical factors, but people come together through very strong elements that are able to transcend these differences. Diversity must also unite us.”. “One of the world’s finest purveyors of music to chill out to”(Pitchfork), Mark Barrott’s new album ‘Jōhatsu (蒸発)’, an 8 track film score, is out now on Reflections.

Mark Barrott is an artist that creatively speaking, never stops moving. His musical career has taken many forms. Some know him as Future Loop Foundation, the alias he used to create and perform ambient drum and bass from the mid-90s. Some know him for his Sketches from an Island albums, which he released under his own name, and others know him as the founder of the highly influential International Feel label, a label that spearheaded the bespoke vinyl movement of the 2010's and brought DJ Harvey out of studio retirement. Barrott has spent close to four decades exploring new sonic territory and pushing the boundaries of various genres and is considered a pivotal figure in the revival of the Balearic music scene of the last decade.

Mark's new album, 'Jōhatsu (蒸発)', is predictably unpredictable. Out now on Above & Beyond's new downtempo imprint Reflections, the album is a full departure from anything Mark has written before, partly because he was writing to moving picture. In 2019, Mark was commissioned by a director to write the score for their new documentary, 'Jōhatsu (蒸発) ... the art of Evaporation'.

'Jōhatsu (蒸発)' is an 8-track journey through the sounds, sights, smells and sensations of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture.

Every year, it is estimated that as many as 100,000 people in Japan vanish, without a trace. These are the so-called johatsu. The evaporated people. People become jōhatsu for many different reasons including addiction, divorce and job loss. While some people may consider taking their own lives, others simply… evaporate. Jōhatsu refers to these people who purposefully leave the lives they knew behind.

'Jōhatsu... the art of Evaporation', shadowed a Japanese man as he went through this exact process, paying a contractor to help him vanish, moving from central Kyoto to Scandinavia. Scene notes from the director and shots of Kyoto at night-time, rural Japan, and Scandinavian forest-scapes informed Barrott's musical direction for the project.

The tracks on this album are the 'full' pieces - those written for the longer sequences of film. 

'Jōhatsu (蒸発)' is a fairly air-tight representation of Mark Barrott as an artist. It's spontaneous, it's unexpected, it's unrestricted and it's a gorgeous listening experience. It's the sound of an artist set free, without creative restraints. If music could fly, 'Jōhatsu (蒸発)' has wings.

It’s a narrative of a particular feeling of absence that’s haunting me; perhaps best described as the longing for a childhood emotion, a feeling of unconscious wonder, a state of simply being without an essence or perhaps like a memory continuously receding whenever I try recalling it, seemingly closest and most present at a certain distance, with a certain absence.

Returning to the label is Glaswegian producer and composer Jon Cooper, aka Turtle, presenting his new ethereal 4-track EP ‘Acts Of Union EP’.

Born out of his fascination for sound and a desire to entertain his peers, Jon’s journey into music production began in the vibrant electronic scene of late ‘90s and early 2000s Glasgow. Despite having no formal musical training and claiming an inability to read sheet music, Jon’s evolution was profoundly shaped by his surroundings and a commitment to experimentation, gradually moving away from the confines of dance music and embracing a more fluid and experimental sound.

Capturing the ears of renowned documentary filmmaker Fernando Villena, he was commissioned to compose scores for award-winning documentaries such as ‘Any One of Us’, ‘Dear Rider’ and ‘The Aplanist’, exercising his creative freedom, and crafting soundscapes that perfectly complement the visual narratives. 

Turtle’s brand new EP ‘Acts Of Union’ is an enchanting sonic journey, born from spontaneous improvisation and primarily recorded in a single take. Each track blends into the next as he intertwines dreamy synths and minimalist instrumentation, featuring guitars and a timeworn, dusty organ sample. The project is introspective, and crafted to evoke a sense of nostalgia, he summarises this concept as:

“The Acts of Union EP draws its inspiration from the contemplation of mortality as temporary physical vessels and the notion that the spirit, soul, or energy—whatever name you prefer—persists beyond our mortal flesh. The aim was to craft a sonic aesthetic that evokes a sense of nostalgia - a beauty that emerges amidst degradation, akin to enduring vignettes that have weathered the passage of time.”

In "Lampbound”, you embark on a retro video game journey as Max, an ordinary guy who stumbles upon a mysterious genie's lamp. In an unexpected twist, Max is magically pulled into the lamp and finds himself trapped within a fantastical world. With the genie's powers at his disposal, he must navigate through a labyrinthine maze of perilous puzzles, treacherous platforms, and enigmatic creatures to escape the lamp's confines.

As Max progresses, he uncovers hidden secrets and acquires unique abilities granted by the genie. These powers enable him to manipulate the environment, such as freezing time, conjuring temporary platforms, and transforming into different forms. Careful planning and clever utilization of these newfound skills are crucial to overcoming the various challenges that lie ahead.

Throughout the game, Max encounters eccentric characters, both helpful and mischievous, who offer cryptic advice or attempt to hinder his escape.

As Max inches closer to his freedom, he unravels the genie's backstory, uncovering the truth behind his entrapment and the enigmatic origins of the lamp. Will Max triumph over the lamp's ancient magic and find his way back to reality, or will he remain trapped within its confines forever?

4. Clockwork Citadel: Max finds himself in a clockwork-themed fortress, where he must manipulate gears, overcome timing-based obstacles, and solve intricate clock puzzles.

5. Mirage Oasis: Max encounters an illusionary oasis filled with mirages and sand-based challenges. He must decipher the real pathways, avoid mirage traps, and cleverly utilize sand-based mechanics.

6. Haunted Halls: Max enters a spooky section of the lamp, haunted by mischievous spirits and ghostly puzzles. He must outwit the apparitions and navigate through ethereal environments.

7. Elemental Chambers: Max enters a series of elemental chambers representing different powers. He must master the elements, such as fire, water, and wind, to progress and overcome elemental puzzles.

8. Genie's Sanctum: Max reaches the heart of the lamp, a majestic chamber housing the powerful genie. He must face the ultimate test, a climactic showdown with the genie, combining all his skills and knowledge.
