แถลงการณ์คณะผู้จัดทำ *
หนังสือเล่มนี้ มีขนาดใหญ่มากพอที่จะสะดุดความรู้สึกของผู้ที่ได้เห็นบ้าง ไม่มากก็น้อย และทำให้คิดว่า เรื่องเกี่ยวกับปฏิจจสมุปบาทนี้ ทำไมจึงมากถึงอย่างนี้ และนี้จัดทำขึ้นมาด้วยความประสงค์อย่างไรกัน. คณะผู้จัดทำ ขอแถลงให้ทราบดังต่อไปนี้

ผู้ที่ได้อ่านหนังสือเล่มนี้ตลอดแล้ว จะเห็นได้ทันทีว่า ทั้งหมดนี้ เป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับความทุกข์และความดับทุกข์ไปทั้งนั้น และเนื่องกับพระพุทธภาษิตที่ตรัสว่า ภิกษุ ท.! ก่อนแต่นี้ก็ดี บัดนี้ก็ดี ตถาคตบัญญัติ (เพื่อการสอน) เฉพาะเรื่องความทุกข์ กับความดับแห่งทุกข์เท่านั้น" ดังนี้ : ดังนั้นจึงเป็นอันว่า เป็นเรื่องที่พระองค์ทรงพระประสงค์ที่จะสั่งสอนนั่นเอง ข้อที่พระองค์ตรัสว่า ธรรมที่ตรัสรู้ เท่ากับใบไม้ทั้งป่า แต่ที่นำมาสอนนั้นเท่ากับใบไม้กำมือเดียวนั้น โดยพฤตินัยแล้ว เรื่องปฏิจจสมุปบาท ทั้งหมดนี้ ก็คือใบไม้กำมือเดียว ดังที่กล่าวนั้น; เรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งก็คือ “อริยสัจโดยสมบูรณ์"

อีกประการหนึ่ง พึงทราบว่า เรื่องอันเกี่ยวกับปฏิจจสมุปบาทเหล่านี้ เป็นเรื่องที่ถูกทอดทิ้ง จมอยู่ในพระไตรปิฎก ไม่มีใครค่อยหยิบยกเอามาบอกกล่าวสั่งสอน รู้สึกเป็นที่น่าสลดใจ เนื่องจากเป็นเรื่องที่เข้าใจยาก, แปลยาก แปลออกมาแล้วก็ยังเอาใจความไม่ค่อยจะได้ น่าเบื่อแก่การศึกษาในรูปแบบธรรมดา จึงถูกละเลยมองข้ามไปตลอดเวลา ทำให้จมนิ่งอยู่ในพระไตรปิฏกส่วนที่ไม่ค่อยมีใครสนใจ, ทั้งที่เป็นหัวใจของพุทธศาสนา ที่ทรงประสงค์ให้สนใจศึกษา ในฐานะเป็นจุดตั้งต้นของพรหมจรรย์ ดังที่ปรากฏอยู่ที่หน้า ๒๓๙ แห่งหนังสือเล่มนี้แล้ว

การทำหนังสือเล่มนี้ เป็นงานหนักเกินไปสำหรับข้าพเจ้าผู้อยู่ในวัยชรา ที่จะทำตามลำพังผู้เดียวได้ แต่ก็ทำสำเร็จไปด้วยความช่วยเหลือร่วมมือของเพื่อนสพรหมจารีผู้อยู่ในวัยหนุ่มช่วยเปิดสำรวจหน้าพระไตรปิฎกอย่างทั่วถึง เพื่อรวบรวมเอาข้อความที่เกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้มา ให้ข้าพเจ้าคัดเลือก ร้อยกรองและปรับปรุงสำนวนคำแปล เพื่อให้สำเร็จประโยชน์ดังที่เห็นอยู่ในรูปแห่งหนังสือเล่มนี้ ท่านผู้ได้รับประโยชน์จากหนังสือนี้ จงได้อนุโมทนาและขอบคุณภิกษุผู้เหน็ดเหนื่อยเหล่านั้น โดยเฉพาะ ธมฺมวิจิตฺฺโต ภิกขุ ซึ่งได้ช่วยเหลือมาตั้งแต่ต้น จนกระทั่งการทำสารบัญ และปทานุกรมท้ายเล่ม ด้วย เพื่อนร่วมงานอีกบางคน ในหน้าที่ตีพิมพ์ต้นฉบับ

ข้าพเจ้ามีประณิธานอยู่ว่า ขอให้คำว่า อิทัปปัจจยตา" และ ปฏิจจสมุปบาท" ได้กลายมาเป็นคำที่ติดอยู่ที่ริมฝีปากของพุทธบริษัท ในการพูดประจำวัน สมกับที่เรื่องนี้เป็นทั้งเนื้อตัวและ หัวใจของพุทธศาสนา หรือเป็นองค์สมเด็จพระศาสดา ที่จะยังประทับอยู่กับพุทธบริษัททั้งหลาย หลังจากที่ทรงล่วงลับไปแล้วโดยพระวรกาย, ตลอดกาลนาน.

About the Speaker:
Tomás Bogardus is associate professor of philosophy at Pepperdine University. He was born in Long Beach, California, and earned his BS in biology at UC San Diego, his MA in philosophy at Biola University, and his PhD in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. He works mainly in metaphysics and epistemology, and is most interested in the mind-body problem and the rationality of religious belief.

About the speaker:
Prof. Pezzini returned to Oxford in 2021, after five beautiful years in St Andrews (2016–2021). He studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (2003–2008) and the University of Oxford (D.Phil. 2012). He held research fellowships at Magdalen College Oxford (2013–2015) and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2016). From 2010 to 2013 he worked as Assistant Editor for the Oxford Dictionary of Medieval Latin.
