In a career spanning thirty years, Phish became one of the most significant live music phenomena of all time. On the basis of word-of-mouth about their performances—with virtually no radio or video support—the band grew from playing club gigs along their native East Coast to drawing 100,000 music fans to remote corners of the country. At every turn, Phish managed to win over newcomers and casual fans as well as maintain the loyalty of their devotees with a singularly broad repertoire, virtuosity, and by making a unique event of each show.

Back in the day I locked grooves with drummers in outfits like Craig (Sam James on vocals) and other sweaty basement rock projects that played forgotten bars. Volume was fun until the headaches became permanent, so I traded amps for a looper, stages for a wood stove, and band drama for Monique’s patient eye-rolls and two cats who judge every take.
These days I layer gentle, weightless drones over the constant oceanic roar in my head—albums like Deep Blue Nights started as me just trying to give my ringing brain something calmer to listen to while Monique’s at work or the store. Turns out it helps other tinnitus sufferers zone out or sleep too. Bonus points if she comes home to find me lost in loops and dinner still unmade.
Fueled by coffee, hard-won sobriety, Monique’s endless support, and Brody & Esther’s silent disapproval. No shredding, no ego, just stubborn layers of pretty noise from a guy who learned feel from real bands and now finds it in quiet accidents.
