RHYW steps up for the next instalment of Off-Kilter with a mind-melting mix of stripped back askew rhythms, propulsive bass and leftfield techno.

Like liquid mercury in a petri dish—slick, supple, and playfully disobedient—Rhyw’s music dazzles as it defies expectation. The Welsh-Greek artist cut his teeth as one half of Cassegrain and has been finding new paths for his mutant sound ever since, releasing on Fever AM, the imprint he set up with Mor Elian in 2017, as well as labels like Avian and Modeselektor’s SSPB. 

In the studio or behind the decks, he brilliantly fuses different strains of ultra-modern techno and broken beat: eyes-down minimal lights up with modular sass, choppy kicks flirt with rolling grooves, and sharp sound design slices through earthy subs. It’s the kind of amphibious sound that can slip into otherworldly spaces while never truly leaving the dance floor. 

Rhyw turned heads with the heavyweight two-tracker ‘Biggest Bully’ in 2019, earning himself sets at Berghain, Berlin Atonal, and Boiler Room Tokyo, along with tours in Asia and the US. Online and on-air, he’s guested on Hessle Audio’s Rinse FM show and Mixmag’s ‘In Session’ mix series, and contributed podcasts to Crack and FACT. Even when they leave the gate at full pelt, these sets showcase Rhyw’s subtle sense of intricacy, balancing airy atmospheres against tougher tackle. But whatever the energy level, there’s always an alien presence in Rhyw’s sound—a shapeshifter whose twin motives are to bewitch and disorientate the listener.

Armenian artist @davenyxaether has been a focal point of our music consumption, lapping up each mix and release with fervent hunger, since his explosive track "strngr" on Serbian compilation @kepasaparadoks. His productions and mixes reach a level of frenzied beauty many can only dream of. Traversing deep ambient explorations, through grimey bass to fiery heights of percussive madness. His latest release on @typelessrecords is a further testament to his unique taste and skill for carving up volatile, percussive, bass-heavy hits. Dave N.A. everybody. Swiss pro­duc­er and DJ NVST (@ghettonast) likes to shock her crowd. She thrives on clashing sounds, scenes, genres and textures into uncomfortable new worlds, all of which is a result of coming up from the illegal party scene in her homeland. She works hard to develop and preserve that native scene in many different ways: she is part of the Female:Pressure fam­i­ly, co-runs the French label Big Sci­ence and hold­s down res­i­den­cies on LYL­Ra­dio and Rinse FM. 
 
This week's mix was recorded in Le Bourg, a club in Lausanne that NVST tells us has recently been taken over and is working hard to bring something fresh to the scene. The mix is filled with unreleased tracks from NVST's favourite artists and forthcoming tunes from labels like Big Science, Kindergatern and moshtrq next to some of her all-time favourites. It opens with a collage that includes Tamika D. Mallory's 'State of Emergency' speech of which she says "I remember the first time I heard it so accurately; I knew I should include it symbolically as well because it resonates so much with me."
