For our 905th RA Podcast, we're proud to welcome Goldie, one of the most famous, talented and important electronic music artists of all time. Starting out as a graffiti artist, he eventually made music under the name Rufige Kru, helping push the then-nascent genre of jungle forward with tracks like "Krisp Biscuit (Power)" and "Terminator." The latter was released under the name Metalheads, which would later become the name of his label (with a z instead of an s). Metalheadz—which he cofounded with DJ Storm and the late Kemistry—celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and remains the defining outlet of drum & bass, the genre that grew out of jungle that Goldie helped invent with records like 1995's massive crossover album Timeless (alongside countless other classics). He's a producer, DJ, actor and all-around celebrity, a huge personality in UK electronic music.

Goldie is also RA's guest curator this month, and his tenure starts with this mix. We'll have more to come starting this week—check our editor's letter later today for more information—but for now, here's a survey of drum & bass past and present from a man who helped invent the genre. With plenty of new Metalheadz material plus a healthy dose of older tracks, these two hours lay out the history of Metalheadz, drum & bass and its various subgenres, from twinkling liquid to rumbling techstep. It's the first part of a month celebrating Goldie's legacy, and we can't wait to show you the rest.

"Loefah has changed UK club music forever – several times. His re-imagination of Jungle marked the transition from upbeat “ongibongi” to the halfstep bass-bin tremblers that people commonly associate with Dubstep’s golden era. Take the classic remix of D1’s “Crack Bong” for example, retrieved by Version from dubplate a couple of years back, and you get the picture. Loefah’s own Swamp 81 label, starting in 2009, paved the way for a new generation of producers on the intersection of Techno, House and what he himself coined as “post-dubstep”. A long-lasting collaboration with Orson and Hops emerged in a series of wild mid-week events at OHM 2015-16, bringing artists like Mala, Chunky or Josey Rebelle to our beloved living room. For the final Version of 2023, things come full cycle again: Loefah is back for an exclusive DJ set, his first in Berlin in 6 years."

Founded in late 2001, Offshore Recordings exists to further the sounds of leftfield drum and bass. Very few labels take the time to explore the possibilities within the genre, but Offshore hopes to add some forward-thinking sounds to everyone’s DJ bag/record crate.

Having begun as an outlet to release the work of Anemone and Clever, the label took on a broader spectrum, when Clever took the helm. The roster now includes- Alaska, Alpha Omega, Anemone, ASC, Clever, Deep Blue, Endemic Void, Fanu, Fracture + Neptune, Graphic, Intex Systems, Justice, Macc, Marstman, Nucleus, Paradox, Pieter K, Seba, Sileni and Tundra with remixes from Klute, Martyn, Nubian Mindz, Omni Trio, Titonton, LXC, Starkey and Vex’d.

The label has gained recognition for both its originality and boundary pushing, by both the press and the scene. Projects with Ohm Resistance, Commercial Suicide and Hotflush have encouraged this. The ethics behind the label have fans comparing it to such greats as Partisan and Certificate 18.

Expect only great things from this Brooklyn based outfit, whose future becomes brighter and brighter everyday.
