Matteo Ciccarone, better known as Sickarone, is a producer from Turin with a sound shaped by Jungle, Garage, Footwork, and everything in between. His works are entirely made on his hardware setup: an old MPC sequencing various drum machines and synths, allowing him to express his musical ideas in the most direct way possible. His productions are full of nostalgic, properly chopped breaks, tons of pitched and hypnotic vocals and deep subs.

In a blizzard of breakbeats, b-lines and acid hooks, Denham Audio have brought new urgency and vitality to the modern rave scene. The sound they’re pushing is rooted in the legacy of UK Hardcore, but those foundational sounds and styles are given a thorough spruce up, feeding into the buoyant areas of exploration happening between 140 and 160 BPM. Releases have been coming thick and fast, from early outings on Nineteen Ninety Four and Artifice through to a blistering run on WNCL, Frendzone! (alongside Violet), Lobster Theremin, Sneaker Social Club and more. Across these 12”s you can hear every shred of influence spilling out – from the upfront Hardcore and Jungle through to Hip-Hop and Reggae, and beyond the confines of music into Sci-fi and Anime.

Balamii resident and Sticky Tapes-founder Theo Everyday arrives with a huge debut on Cheeky Sneakers, seamlessly blending the worlds of jungle, electro and trance with his signature sauce of nostalgic and futuristic hyper-funk.

Having curated the Sticky Tapes mix series and label – supporting music from artists such as Stones Taro, Om Unit, Jossy Mitsu and Lobster Theremin label head Asquith – the DJ and producer knows a thing or two about merging differing styles and energies. The Holsten FM EP plays out like a three hour club set; placing classic UK sounds at its foundation and throwing multi-coloured paint all over them.

‘The Way You Feel’ makes use of the pitched-vocal, SoundCloud hyper-pop aesthetic with hardcore-piano stabs and heartstring-tugging cheese wrapped within a huge low-end swinging bassline. A great lights-up tool to leave them with a smile on their face. The classic rave energy is maintained on the EP title track - a stripped-back cut of ragga jungle-step that’s as meditative as it is devastating.

From golden-era rave and jungle future-mutations to heads-down club sounds, ‘Every Body_s Talking (well let_s talk) is a strobe-light power sequence for when things are in full swing, before 90s breakbeat and trance join forces on a ‘Six and Two Threes’ hands-in-the-air moments.

Breaks-littered dream sequences that feel like a warm hug follow on ‘Summer Lie In’ – its chopped melodies and stirring atmospherics causing ripples within the pond of paradise – before ‘Mod Cons’ closes with a squelching cut of acid-electro on a killer digi-only exclusive.

Out here in the middle of nowhere it was easy to forget the importance of human contact. For as long as he could remember this little cottage in the depths of the countryside had been home. He was as secluded as one could get, and that suited him just fine, after all you didn't miss what you'd never had. Nature and its inhabitants were his closest confidants; the sheep that roamed the fields, the bees that buzzed in his garden and the woodpecker that perched on his window each morning - they listened to his thoughts, feelings and ramblings, without expecting anything in return.

It's been over a year since London's Control Freak Recordings, the label arm of party starters Cabin Fever, shared a new record in their White Label series. Always available as a super limited run of hand-stamped records (once they're gone, they're really gone), previous contributions have come from Syz as well as Guava, Breaka and pals, and now they're firing it up once again with an EP from Graz-based producer Awo Ojiji. While the wigged-out, percussive tracks take cues from UK club music, specifically the realms of leftfield techno and bass, he manages to craft his own singular take on these UK-centric sounds.

Firm favourite, Angel D’lite is back to close off the record with her jungle filled flip of ‘Moonquake’.

Mr Telephones pumps up the pace, jumping drastically from his last downtempo-oriented "Point Breaks / Beach Breaks" EP. This time closing in on the 150bpm mark, with the raw pump of "Blue-Tek", a funky oddball-roller hybridizing ghettotech, detroit soul, balearic and italo house. Flip wax for the trippy soundscapey ambient techno-trip "FV555", speeding through a hazy highway, with the forest on one side, and ocean on the other. They floated softly upon the breeze, flowing through the forest in which wild dancers lived. These were the night time melodies, sounds which warmed the coldest hearts. He watched as people all around him listened intently to the music which echoed between the trees, looking upwards he could catch a glimpse of an occasional star which flickered and fluttered against a backdrop of thick dense black. This was a magical place and these were the sounds of the natural future. 

Alan Dixon is set to release a new EP on Love Attack and it certainly leaves us longing for the sort of warm, hedonistic nights described above. This one is destined for sun kissed stages and the close company of friends on the dance floor.

Conceived in the literal underground of the INDEX:Records basement studio in Berlin, the enigmatic, new-coming “pop” group Downstairs People, is an unlikely collaborative project to be birthed from 2020 – the year of isolation. ‘Underground Pop’ is a collection of aural serotonin hits that touch the feel good receptors, genre hopping between synth-pop, house and neo-RnB. 

The group is conducted and glued together by INDEX:Record's own, Jorge Camacho, the maestro behind his alias, @vasesound. Camacho brings together a gauntlet of Berlin-based artists and INDEX: affiliates, dishing out something fresh after countless late night sessions, only to curate a serendipitously coherent record of left-field pop hits, that arrive just in time for summer.

‘Underground Pop’ by Downstairs People is out 16 April 2021 via single disk 12” LP vinyl, with full album artwork outer-sleeve and black inner-sleeve. A run of 250 copies are distributed worldwide by Rubadub and available to purchase on INDEX:Records' Bandcamp (where a limited amount are offered with a rare edition Downstairs People Zine, designed by @amos-turner).
