Priyanka Das, an alternative filmmaker and Ohio University alumn, sat down with Talking Studio to discuss why she started making films, what her time at OHIO meant to her and what her future projects hold for her as an artist.

Desert Miniatures: Insects was commissioned by Trio Sonora: Robert BeDont, Travis Jones, and Martin VonKlompenberg.  The piece reflects on my time living in Tucson, AZ and all of the different types of insects that thrive in the Sonoran Desert.  Each miniature selects a particular behavior or quality each insect possesses and explores it musically.  Separate from the musical depiction of the insects was the central concepts of quasi-unison and the hyper-instrument.  Instead of treating the three parts as individually important and mutually exclusive, the parts work together to form an imaginary instrument capable of polyphonic sound production.  Through micro-polyphony and rhythmic irregularity, this hyper-instrument performs quasi-unison gestures that resemble columns of sound rather than melodic lines.

II. Cactus Bee
     These bees are solitary and live underground.  They collect the nectar of cactus flowers.  The bassoons combine to create a flurry of activity representing a particular bee going about her daily business of collecting nectar and returning to her subterranean nest.

WOUB's Emily Votaw interviewed artist Daniel King about his forthcoming book, "Unpacked Box," which features previously unpublished work by artists Rebecca Holbrook-Erhart and James Luckett, as well as an essay by former Ohio University professor Ray Klimek. 

The book is being published via a crowdfunding campaign through August 25.

New Old Images (Now) Wants Your Old (New) Photographs

As a part of the Ohio University College of Fine Arts Summer 2019 Arts Programs, both Daniel King and Cassidy Brauner instructed a time based media program for children ages 10 to 13. Within the programs, campers learned how to use basic video and audio storytelling software and equipment and crafted videos and podcast programs to show off to their parents at the end of their camp week. 

WOUB's Emily Votaw spoke to Brauner and King about the roles they played in the camp, and why audio and video storytelling is a skill worth sharing with children in this age group in the interview embedded above. Stick around to the end of the interviews for a brief sound collage made up of some of the podcasting projects that campers crafted as a part of King's side of the program.

Tantrum Opens Ionesco’s 'Rhinoceros' Nov. 21

Ohio University assistant professor and String Division Chair of the music department at Ohio University, Dawn Wohn, released a commercial album entitled Perspectives earlier this month, which features works by female composers of color, who are often neglected by the Western musical canon.

Around the time of the last Presidential election, Wohn said that many of her female students of color were coming to her hoping to be heard by her in a way that they felt they were not being heard by the world at large.

"It was a difficult time, and they wanted to speak to someone they felt would listen to them," said Wohn, who had experienced the same kind of exclusion felt by her female students of color at Ohio University while she was studying at The Julliard School, Yale University, and Stony Brook University. It was from that experience that Wohn first thought of the project that would become Perspectives.

"At that time, I was thinking of how, in a non-political way, I could make my students understand that music is really inclusive," said Wohn. "A majority of the works that we study in school are very Euro-male centric, (...) and I realized that some of my students didn't even realize that there were female composers from a long time ago, and also currently, and that a lot of these female composers are of different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds and that a lot of them do compose based on those backgrounds."

Wohn worked with her longtime friend and colleague Esther Park to create Perspectives, focusing on showcasing diverse works from female composers. The release features both older works such as "Legenda" by Vítězslava Kaprálová and "Nocturne" by Lili Boulanger and even a brand new one, "Starcrossed" by Jung Sun Kang. Perspectives also features a work by Ohio University alumna and composer Chihchun Chi-Sun Lee, entitled "Provintia 'Sunset of Chihkan Tower."

OU Professor of Violin and String Division Chair Dawn Wohn Compiles 'Perspectives'

The 2020 Emerging Artists annual high school photography showcase at the Kennedy Museum of Art was already going to be a bit different from past exhibitions: for the first time the exhibition would be juried by Ohio University professors Laura Larson of the School of Art + Design and Gary Kirksey of the School of Visual Communications, and the exhibition had made structural changes to hopefully lead to participation from a wider range of regional schools.

By mid-March 2020, however, most everything was shut down to slow the spread of COVID-19, including the 2020 Emerging Artists exhibition, which is typically on physical display at the Kennedy Museum of Art. Quickly the exhibition was moved online, but will be put up whenever the Kennedy Museum of Art can safely operate again.

WOUB spoke to Kennedy Museum of Art Education Coordinator Lisa Quinn about making the switch to a virtual exhibition, and the power of community art in times of crisis in the feature embedded above.
