The iconic Penguin Cafe join the Erased Tapes family and open a brand new chapter to their unique world with new album The Imperfect Sea – out on Erased Tapes 5th May 2017.

A penguin stands in the middle of a scorching desert, far away from its natural habitat. This mirrors composer Arthur Jeffes’ journey and exploration into a new musical territory. Penguin Cafe have evolved into something of their own at the hands of Arthur who started the band in 2009 with the continuation and homage to his father’s legacy, to the late Simon Jeffes’ Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Now, their upcoming album echoes reminiscent sounds that embrace the new.

The album title refers to a saying by his father that “we wade in a sea of imperfections…”, reflecting upon the idea that beauty can be found amongst the chaos. “If there is a narrative to the album it’s coming to the acceptance of the imperfections in all aspects of life; moreover, the recognition that these imperfections and tiny randomnesses are in fact what make up the best parts”, Arthur explains. This has also been highlighted by the striking cover artwork designed by FELD under the art direction of label founder Robert Raths, resembling a lone figure adapting to and accepting its surrounding environment.

Predominantly self-composed, the new album also features covers of electronic works by Simian Mobile Disco and Kraftwerk, along with a re-working of Simon's 'Now Nothing'. Arthur has developed from the traditional folk and jazz heritage Penguin Cafe Orchestra is known for into another realm of blissful ambience and dance music, recreated using strictly acoustic elements.

“For this album I wanted to effect a departure from where we’d been up to now. The idea was to create a musical world that would feel familiar to an audience more used to dance records but stay true to our own values. So we replaced electronic layers with real instruments: pads with real string sections, synths with heavily-effected pianos, and atmospheric analogue drones with real feedback loops ringing through a stone and a piano soundboard.”

On the day of release, the band will play a headline show at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge, commencing the beginning of this new adventure for Penguin Cafe.

The tension between the natural and artificial, the body and mind, are central themes in electronic music in general, and Techno in particular.
The means of creation, focused around technology and interactions with machines, contrast with the emotional response to sound, the mystical ritual of collective dancing, and the ethos of liberation and tolerance embedded in the culture it has produced.

We’re navigating a world of engineered pleasures, big data monitoring of movements and consumption habits, and representations of reality that falsely claim objectivity, further blurred by reduced attention spans and several opaque layers of cultural interpretation and political manipulation.

Manichean simplifications are used to create hate and fear in order to achieve domination and impose limits on freedom. Meanwhile, the irrational belief in endless growth – increasingly disconnected from nature – has led to massive environmental destruction and an unprecedented wave of species extinction.

Our original primal perception – vastly more abstract, emotional and sensual – makes us feel the world as an ambiguous realm we are part of, but not in control of. We exist in a complex network of interacting forces and enigmatic patterns; a matrix of overlapping desires. Reconnecting with this sensory perception and through it spreading love becomes an essential act of resistance.

Hyper Opal Mantis is a triptych on 3 states of desire, and the first long player of Kangding Ray for Stroboscopic Artefacts.
HYPER is the primal, sensual lust; OPAL is the emotional catharsis, a blissful desire for love; MANTIS, like the insect it refers to, is the destructive, fatal attraction.

Last summer Piers Faccini and Blick Bassy met and sang together for a concert in a Romanesque chapel in the Cevennes near Piers’s home. The following morning they agreed to try and write and record something together, the challenge being to get it all done in the three hours they had available before Piers left for another gig. In the exceptional surroundings of Conqueyrac chapel, they wrote and recorded ‘Mother Time’ as well as putting down a version of the American traditional 'Make me down a pallet on your floor' to which Blick Bassy added some words in Bassa, the language of his homeland in Cameroun.

Recorded in one take, whilst keeping the overall colour of the chapel’s unique acoustics, this very limited edition 7” vinyl is produced by Beating Drum and No Format.

Forget Forgive is the most personal track I’ve written so far. It’s a really intimate lyric about battling some pretty nasty demons and, in overcoming them, figuring out the kind of person you want to be. I wrote and recorded it all in one night (between the hours of 11PM and 4AM) in my home studio in Amsterdam. Just bass guitar, vocals and a sneaky little mellotron and kick towards the end. Some songs take ages to fine-tune and hone, but this one felt like I was just solidifying a strain of thought that had been flowing around inside my head for ages. Playing the song to other people actually always feels a bit icky, like reading an excerpt from my diary out in public. It’s super naked.

Postiljonen is a dream pop trio deriving from Scandinavia. The band emerged quietly back in September 2011 and is composed of Norwegian vocalist Mia Bøe alongside Swedish multi-instrumentalists Daniel Sjörs and Joel Nyström Holm.

After releasing a handful of online only singles in their native Scandinavia (including the heartbreaking interpretation of Whitney Houston’s classic ‘How Will I Know’, renamed here to ‘All That We Had Is Lost’) the trio have managed to create a highly characteristic sound, where ethereal and alluring vocals are interwoven in a mystical, ambient, dreamy and lovable expression. They have been compared to the likes of M83, Air France, Sigur Ros, jj and Cocteau Twins.

Taking inspiration from old black and white movies, the golden 80s, Balearic scenery, sleepless summer nights and describe themselves as nostalgic daydreamers, all of which mirrors beautifully within Skyer’s ten songs.

Featuring singles ‘Supreme’ and Atlantis’, Skyer is summery pop music at its best; made for lazy days and dreamy nights.

Skyer is released on July 22 2013.
