Disquiet Junto Project 0426: Cellular Chorale

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0595: Filter Progression (part 2 of a Disquiet Junto Éliane Radique inspired project)

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0595 discussion thread:

Used a field recording from a few months ago of moderate rain falling outside our garage side door. Captured the sample with a Tascam DR-100MK3 and built-in mics. Along with the rain, there are occasional bird calls, vehicle noise from a road nearby, and other random outdoor sounds from the neighborhood.

Animated the recording by slowly modulating Auto Filter and Resonators in Ableton Live. Also used a bit of Convolution Reverb Pro to give the track some depth.

Dark Blue Undertow [disquiet0595]

This track was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0595 (details see below): I used a second-hand dictaphone to create a fieldrecording of the ventilation in our toilet. Then I built parallel tracks by applying different filters and a resonator to this recoding. Nothing else was added.

"For this week's Disquiet Junto assignment -- 0595 ("Filter Progression"), I was called to "make music by processing a static sound."

White noise or a field recording had been suggested in the assignment's notes, and My mind harkened way back to a junto assignment in July of 2014, when We were called to "try to record one minute of sound that would suggest to the listener the pleasing experience of air conditioning — of the air being cooled on a hot summer day" [disquiet0135].

I recalled how much that junto assignment had been the closest I had done professionally to a field recording (an air conditioner), and used that track -- "Balm sm4lev" -- as the basis for this week's study in frequency and resonance.

In My DAW, I first saturated it with the FabFilter "Saturn 2" saturator, then ran the signal through WAVES' "Renaissance Bass" in order to accentuate the track's lowest, prominent frequenc[y/ies] (65Hz to 75Hz), and then put it through FabFilter's "Pro-Q3," and, finally, SoundToys' "Phase Mistress."

Throughout all steps, I set out to accentuate the bassiest freqs present in the track:

1] I saturated 65-75 Hertz;
2] I automated the high-pass and low-pass filters of the "Pro-Q 3," slowly rolling both poles up/down -- respectively -- to 65 to 75 Hertz just prior to the tracks highest volume level;
3] I phased the signal, concentrating on 70Hz as the accentuated target frequency and resonance concentration, peaking the effect and its mix to apex at the track's loudest point.

Voila! Whoop (there it is!)."

My contribution for this week's prompt -- details about the process:
Picked bits of of a heavy gain, utterly over-to-top overdriven guitar improv as it lunges into feedback. Inspired by/reminded me of a Ben Frost gig at Village Underground, London. 
Looped bits of said feedback section and fed them through a step filter plug-in in Cubase, causing it to murph frequency and resonance gradually as it moves through different settings, in a pulsating manner, extracting all sounds of ticklish harmonics that I find very pleasing.

Disquiet Junto Project 0595: Filter Progression
The Assignment: Make music by processing a static sound.

This project is the second of three that are being done in collaboration with the 2023 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 6 through 10. The topic this year is « √ » — as the organization explains: “the radical, or square root symbol and the power of its symbolism are central to the festival and these will be translated into music in multifarious ways.” All three projects will engage with the work of Éliane Radigue, who is the Composer-in-Residence for the 2023 festival.

We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who is in charge of the educational activities of the festival. This is the fifth year in a row that the Junto has collaborated with Musikfestival Bern.

Select recordings resulting from these three Disquiet Junto projects may be played and displayed throughout the festival.

Step 1: Choose a static sound, such as a field recording of a specific place, or a held tone, or a recording of noise.

Step 2: Experiment with animating the static sound selected from Step 1 by slowly, subtly, manually modulating it, using only filter frequency and resonance.

Step 3: Record a track resulting from the techniques you developed in Step 2.

I didn’t expect the first experiment to sound any good, so I just laid all bar one of the samples out in sequence (in name order), adjusted its length to 21 minutes and cut it into 3 equal 7-minute tracks. These were laid over each other to play simultaneously. These were duplicated with slight reverb.

I took one short section, which sound a bit like part of a synth arpeggio, and made two longer sequences out of it. The second, towards the end, is downpitched and equalised to sound like an older synth.

The long Montezuma Oropendola clip was stretched to 7 minutes, then ruthlessly reverbed and put through Abstract Chamber to create a dreamy ambient background. This is the only track that sounds different to the source material.

Finally the last 30 seconds of the mix was duplicated, reversed, reverbed and appended to the mix, creating the quirky faded ending.

What amazed me was how logical, structured and ‘composed’ the result sounds. A tribute, I think, to Patricia’s choice and range of sounds.

All done in Audacity using basic effects and plugins.

Step 3: Create a new piece of music using only the source audio. Use as many of the samples as you’d like, but don’t add other sounds, or process the samples to any extent more than slightly altering the individual material.

Background. Patricia Wolf has said of her original piece: “Cellular Chorus is a work of spatialized aleatoric music using smartphones to bring people physically closer to have an interactive and collective experience with light and sound. The piece is played by each user visiting Cellular Chorus on their smartphones. … The sounds I made are meant to harmonize. There is no right or wrong way to play them. The intention of this piece is to repurpose your smartphone for deep listening, creative experimentation, and to immerse groups of people in a sound and light environment with face to face interactions.”

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014.
