Reality is not a choice, accepting it is. This is the mantra behind Vancouver artist Yaris Paris’ latest single “Get Real”. The song grapples with being at a crossroad between what we want to happen and what is happening. The existential theme is complimented by a chugging acoustic guitar, pulsing electric piano and a hypnotic arrangement of synths. Inspired by Pet Sounds era Beach Boys and Yoshimi era The Flaming Lips, “Get Real” feels futuristic yet timeless. Yaris weighs both options throughout the song, until it is too late, and the song concludes in a funk-tinted groove.
