This is third single from Nord & Syd, a Swedish pop group that stands for the quintessential pure pop sound with music straight out of the dark Swedish woods.

"Our new single 'Birches', is an attempt to rewrite Bat for Lashes 'Daniel'. You will always write someone else's song, but it will be your own interpretation. You have to do it from your own point of view and you will have to be honest. The trees in the lyrics –in this case the birch tree—are used for different reasons. It is easy to see something human in birches: their tribes have eyes and mouths and their crowns whisper. Therefore, they not only become a context for the story, but also something that observes and takes part in the story too."

Musik enligt Jerry: “Björkar är en naturromantisk saga, där Nord & Syd fint utforskar sitt ljuduniversum. Fram stiger en egen identitet, under det över fem minuter långa och väldigt dynamiskt uppbyggda stycket sitter jag fastnaglad i kyrkbänken. Det är tydligt att saker blir bättre när det får ta tid, detta är inget hafsverk, detta är på många sätt en final.”

Nord & Syd: ”Vår nya singel, Björkar, är ett försök att skriva Bat for Lashes Daniel igen ­– fast med annan text och melodi. Man skriver alltid någon annans låt igen, det är som det ska vara. Det gäller bara att man gör det utifrån sig själv. Man ska vara ärlig.
Att valet av träd i texten föll på björken beror på flera saker. Det är lätt att se något mänskligt i björkarna: deras stammar har ögon och munnar och kronorna viskar. Därför blir de inte enbart en fond för berättelsen, utan även något som iakttar och tar del. Det finns också något dubbelt i associationen av en björk: samtidigt som den gestaltar något friskt och hoppfullt kan få saker förstärka mörkret som en björks bleka skelett. En annan orsak är geografisk, berättelsen utspelar sig i Björkbackaparken i Östersund och parkens namn förde tanken vidare till björkar. Dessutom finns det inte så många olika typer av träd i Jämtland. Det är väl mest gran, tall och björk. Då faller det sig naturligt och meningsfullt att beskriva en björk, snarare än en palm, en korall eller någon annan livsstilsrekvisita som numera verkar vara brukligt.”

In 1995 I passed on a mix tape to Groove Academy (Giant Step) Marc Labelle at an outdoor stage that was rocking with DJ's Jazzy Nice, Chillfreeze + Groove Collective & Nappy G live. They soon took me on as a 3rd DJ in the weekly rotation of the legendary Giant Step parties. The club vibes were HOT! There was a mix of hip hop, jazz, funk, live instrumentation, paintings, tap dancers as well as a very funky & sexy dance floor! Needless to say, I was hooked & thanks to Marc, Maurice Bernstein & Jonathan Rudnick, I stayed in the Giant Step crew for many years after. We pushed the sounds from Acid Jazz/funk, Hip Hop/Trip Hop, House & Drum & Bass- all with live musicians taking it to another level. I've also had the opportunity to DJ at shows for Jazzmattazz, Tricky, K&D, St Germain, Pharcyde, Groove Collective, Massive Attack, Gil Scott Heron & all the greats who passed through NYC at that time. Here's the 1st mix-tape I did for Giant Step in 1995.
