0x01 Records boss Olan! builds on his label's early success with another fierce EP of robust club tracks. 

This is the eighth release on Olivier Zurkirchen's vital label and one that proves the boss will not settle for any particular style. It follows earlier releases that have got support from DJs across the board including Marcel Dettmann, Radio Slave and Maceo Plex. Zurkirchen himself has a master's degree in jazz piano and composition and is a talented live musician who gets real meaning out of his modular synth setup. After sporadic releases on various labels under a range of pseudonyms, he is now focused on 0x01 Records.

'Deducing Function' opens in brain-frying fashion. Frazzled synths and stomping drums add up to a stark warehouse techno banger. The excellent 'Capability Enhancement' is a jungle workout with precision drum programming and lithe, dynamic bass under ever more expressive synths.

There is a mysterious and unsettling feel to the hardcore techno of 'Cosmocalypse,' with its sawtooth synths and unrelenting energy. 'Scalable Supervision' shows off Olan!'s mastery of his modular set up as the track fizzes with dystopian energy, twisting synths and blistering techno bass. Closer 'hey wie geiz' means "hey how are you” and is a play on small talk. The pitched-down voice sings "Figg mis Läbe" which means “fuck my life,” and adds extra darkness to the hammering drums and trance-inducing synths. 

Scalable Supervision is an EP packed with powerful electronics.

Swiss artist Olan! is known for high-tempo, tear-out techno via their label 0x01 Records, which is now dropping ‘Morphological Freedom’, an EP exploring half-time grooves and dreamy pads for the 12th instalment on the imprint. Each release mixes things up, with Olan! drawing upon their background in jazz and psychedelic rock bands to make passionate and playful techno, with previous outings having received top-level support from tastemakers like Marco Faraone, Rebekah and DJ Bone.

First out of the blocks is 'Weak Hypercharge', in which gabber-tinged drums and wild synths zip about as machines melt down, adding additional energy via bright digital melodies. The assault continues with 'Molecular Assembler', which pairs twitchy synth energy with racing techno drums set against a backdrop of soothing trance pads.

'Morphological Freedom' is a hyperreal world of glistening and pixelated synth lines that convey charm over crunchy and broken drum loops, before the magnificent 'Piece For Them' rounds off the EP with a psychedelic hall of mirrors reflecting harmonies while gleaming metal drums work in overdrive. This is an EP of fresh new school techno that leaves you in awe at Olan!'s mix of mellow synths and warp-speed rhythms.

Later, formal jazz training sharpened their sense of timing and harmony, while the immersive energy of club culture revealed new creative possibilities: mesmerising loops and the raw, unfiltered force of repetition.

"Spikes & Bubbles" encapsulates these contrasts; a creative ethos—balancing precision with whimsy, focus with freedom. The tracks span rediscovered melodies and fresh ideas born from bursts of inspiration, each a study in contradiction. Together, they form a cohesive soundscape designed to forge connection—whether on the dancefloor or in solitude.
