Jóhann is a figurehead in a dynamic and developing scene of composers who move freely and inventively between film scores, minimalist classical, ambient and electronic music. He is equally at home writing commissioned works for the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, Bang on a Can and Theatre of Voices ensembles, as he is collaborating with Tim Hecker, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Pan Sonic, CAN drummer Jaki Liebezeit, Marc Almond, Barry Adamson, and Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))).

Requests from filmmakers to use Jóhannsson’s music in their films has led to a flourishing career in writing original music for more than a dozen movies. Jóhannsson was awarded a Golden Globe in January 2015 for Best Film Score for The Theory Of Everything, directed by James Marsh, whilst his music for the film also earned him both Oscar and BAFTA nominations for Best Original Score.  Jóhannsson’s score for Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario was similarly honored with a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination in 2016.  

This year will see two major films featuring Jóhann’s original music: Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and James Marsh’s The Mercy starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz.

With this mix I just wanted to present some music from my mates and their various labels but tie it together with some older stuff that still informs how I approach production. There's a good crew of people in, around, or connected to Manchester at the moment. Their output, as well as the many days and nights spent together within the bowels of The White Hotel have shaped this mix.  These tunes have a few elements in common, like: being a bit rude, having a kind of 'spooky' feel, being rhythmically playful whilst retaining as much forward momentum as possible.

Szare were formed during a game of darts at the Royal Oak pub in South Manchester. With the first transmission coming via a Horizontal Ground white label in 2009 under the 19.26.1.18.5 pseudonym, and have since released music under the Szare moniker through Frozen Border, Idle Hands, Field Records, Project 13, among others. Now operating out of The Peak District as the solo project of Andrew Diaczuk — with Jack Coulton retaining a seat on the security council as an occasional contributor —  the enigmatic bass-techno hybrid is gearing up to release some of it’s most ambitious and definitive works thus far, with an EP on Mumdance & Logos Different Circles imprint and two other as yet undisclosed releases lined up for 2018. Late last year saw an appearance on Tommy 47’s eponymous 47 labels most recent compilation; 47007, following up from an EP for Delsin’s off-shoot imprint Field recordings, alongside a slew of live dates and DJ shows across the EU.

Excited to announce the return of the EE Polish series in conjunction with Unsound Festival, Krakow.
Highlighting Polish musicians, DJs and producers from thwe local scene - all of whom performed at this year's 2018 Unsound Festival.
 
I would like to take the opportunity to thank Łukasz Warna-Wiesławski and especially Paulina Żaczek for her patience whilst the EE site was down. Also a big shout out to Mat Schulz, the co-founder and artistic director of Unsound Festival - the world's greatest Festival.

Resina is a Polish cellist and composer signed by Fat Cat’s imprint 130701, which has now released two of her solo albums, including this year’s Traces. She’s very well known on local scene as a frequent collaborator of many artists in different genres. Solo, she’s carving her own way in modern classical indebted ambient music. Her second album Traces sees her expanding her sound palette, employing not only otherworldly soundscapes created from heavily looped and processed cello, but also wordless vocals and rhythms. These take inspiration from an obsession with damaged sacral objects, memory, survivors of violence and the ravages of time.

“This is a home recorded set which is much like the typical kind of set I do when I play in a club at 4-5 am, for example when I play at Rex Club and Gaité Lyrique in Paris. I try to get something immersive going rhythm-wise but also in the sonic aspect, and let one or two moments in the hour to breathe a little. I like to begin by building a four to the floor groove and later let the rhythm disintegrate a little.”

Head of the fast rising imprint In Paradisum, Mondkopf has a love for the experimental, the industrial and the distorted that brought him logically to join Perc Trax. His EP The Nicest Way released on the label in February showcased the two side of his music, with the brutal techno of “Ruins” & “No Icons” and a more symphonic side with BBC favourite “33 000 Bells”, receiving was praise from Dave Clarke, Optimo and Untold among others. He is now putting the final touches to his next album.
