Pecoe - Retro Breaks Mix Series

Considered one of the pioneers of the Nu Skool Breaks sound and an innovative person in trying out new sounds Adam Freeland had many a hit back in the day. Heading the very start of the breaks scene back in the late 1990's and playing the very most underground acts of that time Adam promoted the very early breaks music through DJing and the Breakbeat Show at Kiss FM as well as starting his own record label Marine Parade records. Never one to shy away from making white label bootleg records back then he went under various aliases, but you could always tell it was him from his particular style of music production.

This mix was recorded live back in 2004 at Roxy, Prague and contains basically all of his greatest hits, enjoy this 2hr 30min set.

After getting some inspiration listening to some very early Adam Freeland mixes i though i would head down the path of putting some Ableton mixes together of the very early Nu Skool Breaks & Breaks sounds. So i went on my way researching and finding some very early Breaks tracks from the years 1997 to 2001 which can be kind of annoying as online stores don't necessarily put tracks in correct release date order. For Volume 2 of Old Breaks Mixes i have collected a bunch of tunes from varying years, some are known others a little more obscure and rare. Pecoe - Old Breaks Mixes Volume 2

Volume 3 of Old Breaks Mixes is all about the slapping of phat beats. Tracks in this mix are from around 2005 a time when intros and outros had a long drawn out section making it easier to beat mix, so you'll find some long drawn out mixes along the lines that Sasha was well known for in the early 90's and that progressive type of sound. The mix itself has some beaut tracks that have been lost in time from Progressive to Tech Funk to Nu Skool Breaks, it's a high energy and upfront Ableton mix to listen too.

Pecoe - Old Breaks Mixes Volume 3

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and features many styles of electronic dance music. It was originally the brainchild of Eddie Gordon, the producer of the show from the first broadcast in 1993 to 2001. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule. It is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

For Volume 4 of Old Breaks Mixes I've gone with a selection of tunes from around the year 2000 an experimental time for breaks with the genre Nu Skool Breaks really hitting the EDM scene hard with a bunch of producers trying to define their own style. Some great rare old tunes in this Ableton Mix most from vinyl record rips as they never got a proper digital release, we are talking late 90's here at times. Hope you guys enjoy the step back in time.

The Autobots are a UK electronic act that in the later part of the 2000's concentrated on the higher tempo of Breakbeat, Tearout Breaks. A high LIVE energy act that recently appeared at a Halloween festival in Spain and also had a new Drum and Bass release through Viper Recordings. This mix takes it back to the good old days when The Autobots were in their prime. - pardon the pun ;-) and i have just realised that sounds very wrong. lol.

The Autobots - Promo Mix August 2007

Deekline and Wizard cemented themselves in Breakbeat folklore. Known for their Booty Breaks from back in the day they were a force to be reckoned with releasing a full album called "Breaks, Beats and Blondes" on Botchit & Scarper Records in 2004. Another one in 2009 and 2 mix compilations. Unfortunately they both parted ways but Deekline has kept producing music and travelling the world DJing till this day.

Alexic Rod aka Colombo is an award winning artist hailing from Malaga, Spain. In 2010 he won Best New Producer at the Breakspoll Awards and followed this up in 2011 by winning Best Producer while also winning Best Track called "Everybody" for the same year. Colombo was also one part of another award winning act called Bass Star Dos along with fellow Spaniard DJ Kultür.

DJ Icey aka Eddie Pappa is an American DJ/Producer who has been known for founding the early Florida Breaks scene. Born in Florida his original DJ name was DJ Icee but he had to change that name becuase of a threat from a local ice cream company sueing him over the use of the name, so his name DJ Icey was born. With a huge back catalogue of music spanning back to 1993 and leading him up to today DJ Icey has had several albums chart on the Billboard charts as well as various singles. He also started his own record label Zone Records back in 1993.

Basically this guy is a legend !

This relatively hard to find mix was given away for free with the February issue of Mixmag in 2001 and comes directly from my CD collection. Entitled "Mixmag Presents Elastic Breaks - The Sound Of Breakbeat mixed by the Plump Djs" it was one sort after mix at the time and one that was on high rotation in my CD player. This mix pretty much launched the careers of the Plump DJs and gained them more of a following on a global scale.

The Glastonbury Festival is a five-day festival of contemporary performing arts that takes place near Pilton, Somerset, UK. In addition to contemporary music, the festival hosts dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and many other arts. Leading pop and rock artists have headlined, alongside thousands of others appearing on smaller stages and performance areas.

This mix was part of Annie Nightingale's Glastonbury Breakbeat Special back in June 2004.

The Crystal Method was formed in Las Vegas by Ken Jordan & Scott Kirkland back in the early 1990's. Considered pioneers of the Big Beat genre The Crystal Method's music has appeared in numerous TV shows, films, video games and advertisements. Their album Vegas was certified Platinum in 2007.

This mix was recorded LIVE in San Francisco by Boombox 34 on New Years 2007.

A Skillz - LIVE @ Electric Gardens August 2007

The Gough Street Session Podcast was aired in the late 2000's by San Franciscan local Zach Moore. The podcast featured international acts such as Elite Force and a bunch of local talent too. This Breaks mix from Zach Moore was aired back in 2009 and mixed intirely on CD's.

DJ Zach Moore spins events from San Francisco to the Black Rock Desert to New York City and beyond. Zach Moore - Gough Street Sessions Breaks Mix 2009

The original members of the Freestylers are Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey who started off their musical careers in the mid 1990's. They released their first two albums ‘We Rock Hard’ and ‘Pressure Point’ on the legendary Breakbeat label Freskanova. The third and forth albums ‘Raw as F**k’ and ‘Adventures in Freestyle’ were released on ‘Against The Grain’another Breaks power house based label. Their last album from 2013 ‘The Coming Storm’ was released through Black Hole Recordings. 

The Freestylers began their career as an Urban Electronic Music Act, and their early tunes ‘B-Boy Stance,’ ‘Ruffneck’ and ‘Warning’ set the marker. As their music progressed so did their anthems with the seminal tunes ‘Punks’, ‘Boom Blast’, ‘Fasten Your Seat-Belts,’ ‘Painkiller’ and more recently ‘Cracks.’ In addition to their status as underground heroes, they have gained commercial success with their huge global hit ‘Push Up’ and have had their music featured in TV and film, including the hugely successful comedy film Zoolander.

Krafty Kuts, real name Martin Reeves is one of the most influential people in the electronic music scene today with experience as a DJ / Producer for more than two decades. Never one to be tied down to a defined genre Krafty has mixed it with the best and has crafted (pardon the pun) the breaks scene in to what it is today. Many artists have come and gone over the years but Krafty is still here leading the way !

This mix is from 2001 and was aired on Triple J Radio Australia as promotion for Krafty as he was on tour of Australia at the time. Lots of bootlegs, rework and remixes in this at the golden time of Nuskool Breaks.

Finger Lickin Records were the home to many great Breakbeat artists and DJs. Started back in 1998 by Justin Rushmoore and Jem Panufnik (known collectively as Soul of Man) they were at the forefront innovating the breaks scene with new music and artists, selling a pile of vinyl records throughout the year 2000 and onwards.

One of the true pioneers and one of the most underated acts in the very beginnings of the Nu Skool Breaks genre is the UK act Backdraft. The female/male duo of Karrie Price & Paul Chadwick first came into the scene through the label Botchit Breaks along with such acts as SOTO, Aquasky, Ken Mac and DJ Quest to name a few. Supported along the way by everyone from Plump DJ’s, Meat Katie, Rennie Pilgrim, FreQ Nasty to Tayo. With releases on Botchit & Scarper, Passenger, Bassrock & Downbeat this Manchester duo are one of breakbeats veteran acts.

Backdraft - Mix For Aquasky 2006

The Stanton Warriors have disography about as long as my arm ! Consisting of Dominic Butler and Mark Yardley, the duo have performed internationally at festivals and parties in Europe, America, Asia and Australia. Their name was taken from a manhole cover, made by Stanton Ironworks, which seemed fitting with their style of underground, cutting edge music.

This mix is from the era of Nuskool Breaks and produced for Breezeblock radio show back in 2001.

It's been 3 years since i started a series of mixes called "Retro Breaks", showcasing some great Nu Skool Breaks & Breaks tracks from the early 2000's. So i though i would go down that path again and put another one together (Volume 4). All these tracks are basically vinyl rips from my vinyl record collection (which i still have) and others that i *cough* borrowed off the internet some years ago.
