DJ Killer aka Rafa Alcantra hails from Spain and is a legendary figure in the Spanish breaks scene with over 30 years experience as an artist and part of the first generation of electronic music DJs in Spain. He has toured the world and shared lineups with many of the great world top DJs at festivals such as Sonar, Creamfields, Goa, Dreambeach, Weekend Beach, Live Dance Festival, Breaknation, Tribal Nation, Flashback, Raveart Summer Festival and Raveart Winter Festival to name a few.

This was a promotional mix i downloaded back in 2007, a bit more progressive but high energy too.

Friday Throwdown (Classic Breaks Rinseout) Live On CCR - 29.09.23

As a Brooklyn-based breaks DJ and producer of Vitamin B, NYC’s longest-running (and also only) breaks party, I always viewed Breakfast of Champions as the great white buffalo of parties. Could it be true, what they said? Did people really come out fully costumed first thing in the morning on New Year’s Day? Did they really shut down full city blocks? Were the numbers really in the thousands? Most important: did people really dance, or did they just stand there smoking cigarettes and taking selfies?

With curiosity in the critical cat-killing stage, my wife and I booked plane tickets and snagged ourselves posh accommodations on a friend’s air mattress in the Mission. Then something happened that made me have to change my pants twice…the Space Cowboys released the DJ line-up, and I was on it!

Playing Breakfast of Champions was an all-time dream come true. I was on at 11:30 in the side room at Mighty, and as soon as I dropped my first track the room filled with west coast friends I hadn’t seen in millennia (or, y’know, since Burning Man). Things got sweaty. Things got crunk. Booties were shaken and drinks were stirred. Asses were smacked (consensually, natch). Dudes got down. Shorty got low. I dropped Joe Walsh and the Doobie Brothers. There was even a guy on the couch who slept through the entire thing!

Afterward, I stumbled out into the blinding sunshine of SOMISSPO (which is a neighborhood? What?) and found myself in what was obviously heaven: a giant tent full of smiling, happy people…all dancing their asses off to sweet, sweet dirty breakbeats in the street in the middle of the day. The legend was true! And it was truly epic. 

Thanks, Space Cowboys, for giving me the chance to play the Actual Best Party Ever(TM), and thanks to everyone who came out and danced. I hope you enjoy listening to my set as much as I enjoyed spinning it for you.

Lanx and Nick Slater, aka the Drumattic Twins, have been a leading force in dance music since they first began touring over 20 years ago. Making their name as Shades of Rhythm, they ruled the early nineties rave scene with legendary anthems ‘Sweet Sensation’, ‘Sound of Eden’, ‘Extacy’ and ‘Homicide’ and performed with the likes of The Prodigy and N-Joi.

Since rebranding themselves as the Drumattic Twins in 1997, Nick and Lanx quickly replicated this global notoriety thanks to massive hit tracks ‘Feelin Kinda Strange’ ‘Twister’ and ‘HyperSpeed’. They teamed up with the legendary release platform Finger Lickin Records in 1999 and settled quickly into the close-knit world of the breakbeat scene, working alongside global acts such as Plump DJs, Soul of Man and Lee Coombs.

From a string of releases from 1999 starting with top the selling "Feeling Kinda Strange" till late 2013 with their "Get Up and Dance EP" on Sugarbeat Records and 2 full length albums in between the Drumattic Twins have laid down a variety of music that have influenced the Breaks Scene and shaped it in to what it is today.

Evil Nine are an English DJ/Producer duo comprising of members Tom Beaufoy and Patrick Pardy. Gaining recognition after signing to Adam Freelands label Marine Parade in the early 2000's their unique sound gathered a high following of like minded people and had a very influential effect in the early Nuskool Breaks scene.

Evil Nine - Annie On Radio 1 - 2002

The Kiss 100FM Breakbeat Show aired in the early 2000's and was hosted by Danny McMillan (where is he now?) and Tayo. It featured the cream of the crop in early Breaks talent as well as a chance to hear great new tracks that were ony available on vinyl at that time.

This one hour mix from Koma & Bones was exclusive to the show at that time and highlights that developing Tech Funk sound that Koma & Bones were into later in their careers.

Koma & Bones - Kiss 100FM Breakbeat Show - 2.2.2002

Well where do i start ? Commonly known as “The Godfather of Breaks” Rennie Pilgrem’s contribution to the early Nuskool Breaks scene is outstanding and given this title is often considered responsible for the creation of the Nuskool Breaks genre. Before moving into breaks Rennie produced techno and acid house and was part of the influential rave group Rhythm Section along with Ellis Dee. Rennie is also the boss of Thursday Club Recordings aka TCR a label which he founded in 1993 which was a major force in the Nuskool Breaks scene. Now concentrating more on his talented art skills Rennie has stepped back from the dance scene and continues to produce some great works of art.

With a huge back catalogue of music Koma and Bones paved the way in the Nu Skool Breaks scene in the early 2000's with hit after hit including the huge Breaks anthem Morpheus on the TCR label. They were a three man outfit from the north west of Britain (Lancaster), comprising of the DJ'ing duo Koma & Bones (Andy Duckmanton & Chris Kirkbride) and former drum and bass producer Proteus (Jude Sebastian).

This mix was recorded LIVE at the now defunct Tangled Nightclub in Manchester, UK.
