Hello, 

I’m pleased to give you Episode 5 of the Lowering The Tone podcast.

This time round I have a great Interview with Lee Rous, one half of the mighty Plump DJ’s, who kindly took some time out to travel down to sunny suburbia to shoot the breeze in my front room for a few hours (I must use the word ‘Interview’ loosely as it really is nothing more than a laid back chat between friends). Lee gives a humorous & honest account of his time in music. It’s refreshing and inspiring to hear producers of this calibre sharing their experiences and laying all to bare.

I will continue to bring you these intimate chats for as long as I can, and if you wish to contribute something to the show you can email me on Mark@loweringthetone.london.

On a slightly different note, I have been racking my brains as to how to float this podcast and also get some new equipment so I am able to give you a more professional show. This is what I have come up with;

Known as "The Godfather of Breaks" Rennie Pilgrem's contribution to the early Nuskool Breaks scene is outstanding and given this title is often considered responsible for the creation of the Nuskool Breaks genre. Before moving into breaks Rennie produced techno and acid house and was part of the influential rave group Rhythm Section along with Ellis Dee. Rennie is also the boss of Thursday Club Recordings aka TCR a label which he founded in 1993. TCR records was a major force in the Nuskool breaks scene. Now concentrating more on his talented art skills Rennie has stepped back from the dance scene and continues to produce some great works of art.

Evil Nine are an English DJ/Producer duo comprising of members Tom Beaufoy and Patrick Pardy. Gaining recognition after signing to Adam Freelands label Marine Parade in the early 2000's their unique sound gathered a high following and had a very influential effect in the early Nuskool Breaks scene.

This mix is from 2005 and a showcase of their sound at that time.

Steve Jeffery aka Pimpsoul is a one man band, producer and DJ who had a heavy influence in the early Nufunk scene (before it became Ghetto Funk). He has worked in collaborations with Bomb Strikes label onwer Mooqee gaining a number one in the Beatport Hip Hop charts and a clever YouTube hit along side DJP for their take on Duck Sauce's Barbara Streisand. 

This mix is from the Summer of 2009 a prime time for the sound of Nufunk which can be heard in this bass heavy party funk set.

This mix was part of Annie Nightingale's Glastonbury Breakbeat Special back in June 2004.

Nathan Phillips "Take Control" (Simply Jeff Remix) - NUPHONIC RHYTHM

EK is Eddie Rasguido raised in Melbourne, Australia and grew up on a staple diet of breakdancing, hip hop and graffiti. Starting up his own crew RKS (Ryming, Kuttin and Scratching) Eddie found his home behind the turntables and by 1991 RKS had performed at the usual local underage jams, a small amount of club shows culminating in a Second Place in the DMC Competitions (entered in the group category). By the end of his High School years Eddie was sold on music as a career and so after completing Year 12 he enrolled in the Melbourne School of Audio Engineering and a year later graduated.

Eddie was still making hip hop and had formed a production team called Rebel Base with DJ Excel. His musical taste soon became more diverse starting off by listening to Techno and he soon purchased his own analogue keyboard. Messing around with hip hop beats he was now crafting a hybrid of breaks and beats sounds, that still had the hook of Hip Hop.

His debut CD, Decoder and the lead track "Future Nation" was instantly picked up by Triple J Radio Australia and lead to the inclusion of 3 tracks on JJJ’s Mix Up Tweak compilation. In his spare time he was often asked to provide cuts and scratches for Sonicanimation’s recordings and was also a fixture when the sonic boys expanded their line up for special shows, like Live At The Wireless and the supports to the Chemical Bros.
