What ever happened to General Midi ?

General Midi, or Paul Crossman, who also performed under the name Fluid, came out of the Bristol club scene, making a splash when he became resident DJ at the Shimmy Club in 1994. His mix of breakbeat with nu-skool, electronica, house, and hip-hop made him a popular act.

Emerging from the backrooms of the Bristol Club scene his slick DJ ability and an ear for a great tune gave him regular appearances at breaks hotspots across the planet such as Fabric, Chew The Fat, Blow Pop, Sounds On Sundays (Sydney), Two Tribes (Australia), Zouk (Singapore), Budapest, all across the USA, Hungary, Spain, Serbia, China and Hong Kong. Teaming up with production partner Eelz, General Midi has been responsible for some of the most genre defining tunes in 'The Westoner' ('99) 'Daft Funk' ('01) 'Further' ('03) & 'You will Be Under' ('03), 'Entertainer' ('04), 'Bass Rockerz' ('04) & 'House of Funk' ('05).

General Midi's singles have been released on some of the most respected breaks labels of the time, including TCR (Rennie Pilgrims label) & Kilowatt (Hyper's label). In 1999 he released his single "The Westerner," followed two years later by "Daft Funk," the same year that his first full-length release, Genetically Modified. All of this has led to his debut artist album 'Midi Style' which was released on Distinct'ive Records in 2005. In 2009 he released his follow up album 'Operation Overdrive'.

Paul Crossman also worked with writing partner and audio engineer Al Watson in the duo act called "Starecase".

Currently Paul Crossman works as a freelance course developer & music technology tutor at Point Blank London.

When it comes to record labels in the golden era of Breakbeat music, Fat! is up there as one of the most consistent, original and standard setting on the global scene... Along with their legendary night 'Chew the Fat' at the End in London, the label pioneered a sound in music that will live forever in the souls of ravers all over the world. 

Luminary artists such as Foamo, Maribou State, Bondax and Baobinga (Sam Binga) and many others passed through the label in its earlier years and created a sound that was rooted in club culture and helped evolve the diverse Bass & Breakbeat sound.

The very first releases featured the likes of Peacemaker, The Apollo Kids, Merka, Tayo & Kickflip releasing tunes and remixes on the label that will live in Breakbeat folklore.... This is what we are here to celebrate! Re-mastered, re-uploaded, and re-presented for you to re-live your heady days of the naughtys! Fat! Records are proud to present to you Fat! Breaks Vol 1. 

Taking a snap shot of the labels earliest highlights from its Breakbeat beginnings, these tunes represent a time in music when influences were flying around like model spitfires at a Saturday morning remote control plane meeting in the park. Techno, early Grime, Garage, Drum & Bass, House, were all being fused into a cohesive melee of breaks and basslines which captured the essence of everything that was fresh and new in the club and dance music at the time, whilst giving a nod to the past with a sprinkling of Disco, old skool Hip Hop and Jungle. 

Fat! has since progressed onto releasing some of the finest House, techno and pop infused dance music in the past decade, but its former years will always have a special place in the hearts and minds of many.

To round off the package, Fat! has enlisted the help of Breakbeat believers and 2 of the eras top DJ's, Terry Atomic Hooligan and Jay Cunning to blend this bunch of classics into an hour long mix thats reminiscent of their many sets at Chew The Fat!

The Crystal Method was formed in Las Vegas by Ken Jordan & Scott Kirkland back in the early 1990's. Considered pioneers of the Big Beat genre The Crystal Method's music has appeared in numerous TV shows, films, video games and advertisements. Their album Vegas was certified Platinum in 2007.

This mix was recorded LIVE in San Francisco by Boombox 34 on New Years 2007.

An absolute legend of the Spanish Breaks scene is Peter Paul from Seville, Spain. His career began in the early 2000's and he has had a long line of releases since. He started the N-Mity Sound label producing varying releases and 3 albums along the way. Peter Paul has also been considered that he created the genre Techno Breaks or Tech Breaks as we know it.

Mike Wells aka Force Mass Motion released his first record back in 1991 on Colin Faver's legendary Rabbit City Records. One of the major tracks at the time was "Panic" which gained mass popularity and earned him a place in touring the world. He also worked under names like Polaris and Cableguy, collaborated with Dylan Rhymes and played a key role in developing the breakbeat scene with tunes like ‘Hold Back’ and ‘Vanquish’ that took him to a deal with Critical Mass Recordings.

He also worked in sound design for the TV show Dark Angel, released the Silencer album that was dubbed the future of breakbeat, went on to work with Meat Katie’s Lot49 and recorded with UK Cream resident Paul Hillyer under the name Xpander. 

This mix from 2006 was for the well known Russian Breaks Forum site (at the time) BBZ. It is a mixture of 4 on the floor Tech Funk and Breakbeat.

Christian J aka Chris Allen's obsession with modern technology began at an early age. He went on to study the piano also at an early age combined with the fascination for the emerging electronic music scene led him to making music with computers.

Building his distinct sound led to Chris being requested to produce various remixes for major labels and eventually leading to an album deal with well know breakbeat label Distinct Records.This mix was recorded for Annie Nightingale and her breakbeat show at the time known as Annie On One, One referring to the radio station BBC Radio 1.

Flash Pointe is a DJ/Producer who discovered this music and scene on his own and is now an utter passion. Being a misfit of the mainstream music or other entertainment scenes, he believes that this is a safe haven for people trying to escape this judgmental world we live in. When DJing, Flash Pointe never strokes his ego. He only spreads love to his audience with impressive continuity in his mix, regardless of the genre. When producing, he rarely follows the rules of music. His sounds are experimental, abstract, influenced by nature and machinery, and adds that on top of some modern club beats to create a tasty, unique sound.

Flash Pointe is just getting in the zone with getting his music out there and now hails from record labels like, Calcast's and Rasputan's label, Mad Rhythm Records and Chris Khaos's label Khaotic Records. He is know for DJing and producing styles like, Breaks, Electro House, Bass House, Jackin House, Techno and many more, always extending his boundaries. He started out playing in many small bars and nightclubs all along Southwest Florida and he's slowly extending outward in other areas around Florida.
