Emily Kokal + Suzanne Ciani - UNA

UMN (The Red Turtle) is Arthur King's improvised composition and performance inspired by Michaël Dudok de Wit's 2016 animated fantasy The Red Turtle. It was performed and recorded live at The River LA on May 24, 2023.

For this particular performance, Arthur King is Carla Azar, David Ralicke, M.A. Tiesenga, Senon Williams, and Peter Walker. The album was recorded by Andy Petr and Jennifer Kraus, produced and mixed by Peter Walker and KamranV, and mastered by Phil Feinman and KamranV. The movie was selected by dublab’s Alejandro Cohen.

Further engaging the concepts of adaptation and musical connectivity –– and adventurous experimentation –– this release is encoded using the dublab Quadraphonic Universally Accessible Resource Kit (QUARK), enabling seamless quadraphonic or binaural listening via standard 2-channel playback, immersive hi-fi receivers, or computer.

Holy War

In Greek myth, Pyrrha is the daughter of Epimetheus and Pandora. She marries Deukalion and, as a couple, they repopulate the earth after a mankind-eradicating, devastating flood brought about by moody, irritated deities. Rampant symbolism is the trademark of her story, setting free new hope after the tragedy and being protected and being held by a natriarchal vessel. There is no round-character-equivalent to Pyrrha in the more patriarchal myths of Utnapishtli or Noah. Deukalion (son of Prometheus) being her first cousin, a strong whiff of ancient incest (as institutionalized in Egyptian culture) cannot be denied.
