Today we premiere ‘Canines’, the B-side from Switzerland native Gaspard De La Montagne’s third EP for Swiss label Creaked Records. Despite releasing his debut with the label in 2013, the three records Gaspard has made for Creaked Records are his only releases. While the quantity of his output is surprisingly small, he makes up for it by ensuring a stringent quality control filter is applied to the music he puts in the public domain.

‘Canines’ is a moody piece of lo-fi techno, designed for the witching hours of the night. Scratchy drum patterns spin around a guttural synth line to paint an ominous picture, before Gaspard releases the tension three minutes in, letting his hi-hats loose to lift ‘Canines’ out of the dark.

In the 1950s, at the very dawn of computers and artificial intelligence, Alan Turing developed a now famous test: the test would involve a human being having an online chat with an invisible counterpart and then the human was asked if he was chatting with another human or a machine. In Turing's opinion, "artificial intelligence" would reach maturity whenever a human would be unable to distinguish between having a chat with a human or a machine. In music, one could ask a similar question: is what we are hearing done by a human musician playing an instrument or by a synthesizer, a sequencer and a drum machine? 
Electronic music is typically obvious: drum machines and sequencers and modular synthesizers rule the electronic music world. Im Element by Fred und Luna is a curious puzzle: we could hear both the human and the machine, depending on where we listen. Percussion is quite mechanic an drum-machine-like, with bass and rhythm also feeling sequenced. And it's tempting at this point to say it's "a machine", but the melody throws me for a loop (pun intended): it is precise and hypnotic enough to be sequenced yet has a very obvious hint of a groove and sway that only jazz players are capable of injecting into a piece. Can a sequencer groove? Is it a human musician sitting at the keyboard, grooving over a drum machine? Or is it even a drum machine or a drummer with a metronome-like precision? 
Turing would be proud of this track and, if the old man had any sense of rhythm and groove, he'd surely start swaying along with it, forgetting his most important question: human or machine?

Ly Sander Releases "Lay Down" Featuring Berlin Based Singer Jules Etienne. This Deep And Poetic Tune Is The First Extract From His To Be  Released Album On "Special Place Recordings".
When Jules Etienne provided these dazzling vocals, Ly Sander knew they deserved the song to be built around them. The poetry and dreamy emotions of the lyrics fully embrace us with this slow tempo in-cantation. Ripperton brought his own magic by bringing the track back up to club speed.
"I had invited Berlin based Jules Etienne to record some lyrics to a preexisting uptempo instrumental" explains Ly Sander. When I witnessed their deep and intricated poetry, I decided to build a whole song from scratch». The result is Lay Down, Ly Sander’s first track not to bear any link with his previous efforts that focused on danceable music. It’s ultra low tempo is somewhat intriguing. «I clearly had my album in mind upon producing this track. "A track that you will enjoy at home rather than in the club" says Ly Sander who’s album "Landing" is to be released next year on Special place recordings.
Ripperton is certainly one of the most thought after electronic music remixers, with over a hundred reworks to his credit for artists such as Radiohead, Laurent Garnier or Beanfield. When Ripperton heard Jules Etienne’s impeccable vocals, not only did he accept this remix duty but took over his holiday time to do so. «It is so rare to get to work on vocals where everything falls right into place» says Ripperton. "I really took time to take this track where I wanted it to be". Ripperton also chose to match the vocals to an instrumental at the original speed of 120bpm, making it fit for the dancefloor where it could well become a new favorite.

C.Y.M. is the collaboration between British producer and DJ Mike Greene (otherwise known as Fort Romeau) and LA-based American musician Chris Baio, who releases music as Baio in addition to playing bass in the acclaimed band Vampire Weekend. Their debut, self-titled EP arrives on Phantasy as an elegant pean to the infinite possibilities of kosmische music, driven by a motorik strain of psychedelia. The foundations of a wider project, C.Y.M. speaks not for analogue nostalgia, but a subtle and modern update on imagined futures that are still open to interpretation.

‘Capra’ immediately establishes the duo’s masterful if unsurprising grip on rhythm, a man-machine stomp that persists as the track takes myriad turns, from post-punk guitar licks and processed vocals, through bubbling modular synthesis and culminating in a soaring, cathartic melody.

On ‘Far Gone’ C.Y.M. turn their studio inward for a more brooding and intimate interpretation of their sound, a balearic amalgam of intriguing vocals, feedback soaked riffs and no-wave inspired movement.

The bliss beneath the waves of noise that crash across C.Y.M’s music emerges fully on the driving conclusion, ‘Super-Cannes’. A hypnotic tempo and blistering drums intertwine with whirling organs, and shimmering keys, providing a wistful and warm finale.
