Recording  from a Seville street with low background hum(thanks to the WorldCup: thunder storm, rain and street sounds: 

Earsights have a low SPL of 110 dB.,  the CEntrance R4R's analogue controls 'level off' sudden peaking before the audio signal reaches the digitalisation stage. 

The recorder essentially winds-down without producing notable audio artefacts. While Earsights are especially tuned to recording the audio range of birds and insects, this combination means you can use these 'hotter' mics at relatively low gain levels to achieve lower overall rates of self-noise across a greater range of environments.

Listening in a very quiet environment, or at a very quiet time, preferably with good quality headphones, at no more than a moderate volume, is very much recommended. These sounds of late summer dawn in Mallee country were widely dispersed. The original recording level was 60 dB, with a further 12 dB gain in post. Listening at a low to moderate volume will more faithfully re-present the original soundscape experience. At first light, the dawn songs of Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters predominate, gracing the early dawn soundscape with a beautiful yet melancholy quality. Also occasional Owlet Nightjar calls (which have continued all through the night), Grey Butcherbirds, a couple of Emu 'drummings', some distant Ravens, amongst others; and, in the distance, briefly, a couple of strays that ought not to have been there at all.  Throughout, the sound of the wind rising and falling, through Mallee woodland of Eucalyptus and Casuarina trees.

2023.02.19 Quiet Dawn of Souls (First Light)

Spring came a while ago now with many 'firsts' but it's always special when you hear your first proper exotic vagrant species and it doesn't get more out of the ordinary than this species for me. The Grasshopper Warbler was always one of those make believe birds for me when I was a kid as how could there possible be a bird that sounds like a Grasshopper but then I heard one for the first time on the Gwent Levels and could not believe my ears, I was so excited and even now it always gives me a boost when I hear one reeling away from bramble patches.

The golden eagle is a majestic bird of prey. It generally doesn't call much apart from contact calls between the pair at nesting sites. Recorded in Bucovina, Romania with Zoom F6 and Lom mikroUsi Pro microphones.

This is a very high-gain recording, the forests are so quiet in this part of Sweden, I like the idea of really opening up the gain.  MixPre3 the gain set to 74db, with a pair of Lewitt 440's.  Recording 4000.

ΩM.AIRA...making acoustic landscape records

Most of these recordings are made in the Doñana National Park for the Integrated sound and landscape  project: ('Estudio integral sobre Sonido y Paisaje -2020.06 ). Support from Vienna Academy of the Fine Arts provided a research grant facilitated through Cristina Lammer and the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations [CSIC] provided material and technical support during various visits.

The project took place in time blocks over 2 years and is focused on making 24 hour 'drop' recordings in six carefully pre-selected points. It also involved developing a practice of first hand 'being in the field' as an audio and sound-field oriented research group. We were then able to return for an extra year as a result of Covid-19 restrictions disturbing our original schedule. We are especially grateful to the park administration for this extra support .
