I was inspired to write this song by the final instalment of The Hobbit, 'Battle Of The Five Armies'.  I did all the melody writing, recording, orchestration and production myself. This is one for all of you Tolkien/Hobbit/LOTR fans out there and something I really enjoyed making.

Hydra Sunrise (ii) is a call to song, from Helios to the birds. As the god paints the sky in shimmering gold...a feat Tetsis had the power to summon...texture is woven from complex string divisions in B-flat Major, the only key capable of depicting such primal light for reasons I do not claim to understand.

The piano may neither be seen nor heard. It has no right to speak, being a secular instrument...too deeply rooted in human hope and aspiration to interrupt Helios. Only the most powerful section of the orchestra (the Strings) may speak of the Sun at daybreak, calling the birds to song, as church bells summon people to prayer.

As the great Professor Tolkien never actually wrote any lyrics for this song, and to my knowledge nobody else has ever written any music for it either, I decided to take up the challenge of creating this legendary song myself. The score was nominated for the Academy Award and BAFTA Awards for Best Original Score. 
It won the Annie Award for Best Music in an Animated Feature Production and International Film Music Critics Association - Film Score of the Year and Best Original Score for an Animated Feature.

Filmscore for Toniko Pantoja's film "Wolf Song". This animated short needed an approach that was very different from last year's "Crayon Dragon", as Toniko decided to go for a much darker and sad theme this time.

The music played a very important role, as the film revolves around a lullaby theme, which took a recurring role in this animated short. The theme had to have a somewhat sad and eerie tone, but give some sort of comfort at the same time to reflect the storyline of the film. It was a lot of fun working on such a thematic base, as it greatly contributes to a film's character in my opinion. As usual, the Oboe was recorded by Kristin Naigus, who's live recordings greatly contributed to the haunting tone in the beginning of the film. The singing parts were recorded by voice actress Karen N. Kahler, who voiced the wolf mother in this film.
