This Mixtape is a compilation of tracks produced by the participates of the 'Take it from the bird - creating music inspired by the Superb Lyrebird' workshop I lead for Unthinking / Unlearning - an online laboratory and residency, a part of the Year of Germany in Russia 2020/21 and collaboration between Klammklang label, Sound Studies and Sonic Arts (M.A.) at the Universität der Künste Berlin and Sound Art and Sound Studies (M.A.) at HSE Art and Design School, Moscow.

‘The Superb Lyrebird’ is an Australian Native bird, which is capable of mimicking natural and synthetic sounds from its natural environment — Participants created their own music sampling biorhythms and timbres from an animal sound open-access archive.

Spiritual Dimensions is a double album that features two very special groups, both filled with truly great and legendary musicians! Both discs were recorded live to capture the energy and spirit that Smith's shows have. 

The first album is by his Golden Quintet. This disc is a modern/avant jazz release that has some distinctive electric touches and features many of the hallmarks of Wadada's work; space, depth, melody and abstraction:

The second album is the first-ever release of Wadada's Organic group and is a completely different creature. It's a fully electric, four guitar, creative, bad-ass beast with slinky grooves, but the same hallmarks run through this set as well:

The easiest comparison between the albums can be drawn by listening to the two different versions of the composition South Central L.A. Kulture, which appears at the last track by the Golden Quintet and as the first track by Organic; its inclusion here in two versions is a good example of how Smith’s compositions can mutate to embrace new settings.

a short piece I produced in 2007 for the Atlantic Waves festival double CD compilation distributed with subscriber copies of The Wire magazine. That year I was invited by SIRR records to perform in a label showcase at the ICA in London. Thanks to Paulo for finding a copy of this track.

This piece uses mainly field recordings from South Estonia around lake Peipsi. The hissing sound is from underwater insects.
