The Duo Okvsho is one of the most promising prospects of upcoming musicians and producers from Switzerland. The two brothers grew up in the city of Zurich with influences from oldschool beatmaking and house/electronic music to the modern Jazz-Scene, Funk and Neosoul.

They started out their musical careers at a very young age in Brazilian percussion groups and, due to their Hungarian roots, they are also familiar with traditional Balkan music.

With the release of their “Traphouse Jazz EP“ in 2018 and their debut album “Kamala’s Danz“ in 2020 via Boyoom Connective, Okvsho gained the attention of a wider audience through placements in Bandcamp Weekly, NTS Radio and the very popular Spotify-Playlist “State of Jazz“.

After effortlessly transitioning from sample based bedroom beats and loop heavy productions to self composed songs, Okvsho managed to elevate their sounds even further. Through playing with local jazz-musicians, their live-band project celebrated jazz as dance music with driving rhythms.

Orange wine is made with an ancient production method for natural wines, with as little human intervention as possible and celebrates simplicity and complexity of natural processes, in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.

The Orange Wine EP, their first release on the label record Hip Dozer, seems like a logical new step for the duo who once again, expanded their musical horizons. For this project, they get back to their roots and combine the simplicity of beat making with the playful and improvised jazz elements the duo is known for. Funkier than ever, their full EP reflects the new exotic vibes of the modern jazz scene. By adding live instrumentation, tropical drums and dancing beats, the group shows how to surf on the smooth and groovy wave of jazzy house music.

OKVSHO - Orange Wine [Full Album]

When Paul Murphy released his critically acclaimed debut solo album, Claremont 56, in 2006, many thought it would be the first of many. In a way, it was, as in the years since he’s released a string of collaborative sets alongside Benjamin J Smith (as Smith & Mudd), and as part of underground ‘supergroups’ Paqua, Bison and Hillside. But that second solo album? Well, it just had to wait.

In early 2023, Murphy finally decided to scratch that itch, roping in some of his most trusted collaborators (keyboardist and bassist Michele Chiavarini, percussionist Patrick Dawes, guitarist Dave Noble and HF International’s Kashif included) to lay down a sumptuous set of tracks that not only showcases his now familiar (bit hard to pigeonhole) neo-Balearic sound, but also proves how much he has matured as a writer and producer since 2006.

In The Garden of Mindfulness is richly musically detailed, expertly arranged and full to bursting with fluid instrumental solos, with Murphy and his collaborators serving up tracks that brilliantly blur the boundaries between languid jazz-funk, downtempo, vintage synth-laden krautrock, dubby grooves and sun-splashed soundscapes.

It simply sparkles from the moment that opener ‘Eighty Three’ slowly rises like the morning sun, with gentle, undulating synth sounds ushering in a slow-motion jazz-funk excursion rich in twinkling electronics, spacey pads and warming bass. Recent single ‘Katanaboy’, a lusciously layered dub disco-infused dancefloor excursion in Murphy’s familiar style, raises the temperature a touch, before ‘Bonne Anse’ and the sublime ‘Unka Paw’ (whose combination of evocative fretless bass, extended electric piano solos, Clavinet licks and acoustic guitars is genuinely spellbinding) invite a combination of wavy shuffling and flat-on-the-back, eyes-closed appreciation.

And so it continues, with gorgeous title track ‘In The Garden of Mindfulness’ making way for the boogie-influenced, Japanese-British brilliance of ‘Hangsang’ (check the jaunty pianos, yearning breakdown and exotic melodies). Murphy’s long held love of warm, weighty bass, hypnotic disco grooves, colourful analogue synth sounds and jazzy guitars once again comes to the fore on ‘Afternoon Bob’ before the album reaches a fittingly triumphant conclusion with ‘Late In March’. 

A neat sonic summary of all that makes the set such a rewarding and entertaining experience, repeat listens reveals a wealth of musical details, from off-kilter triple-time drums and surprise bass guitar solos, to impeccable piano solos (provided by the immensely talented Chiavarini), fizzing jazz-funk synth doodles and stirring synth-strings. It’s a breathlessly brilliant way to end an album that was genuinely worth waiting for.

Featuring the stand out opener, Doh Zen. an electric piano, breaks and bass rolling groover, complete with string stabs and global atmospherics reminiscent of the classic Om Lounge series. Also included are the meditative breakbeats of Green Flash with electric bass and mellowed out baritone sax. Inner Mist is a mysterious track for the heads, followed by the percussive flute looped Lowereastside and Gumdrop to round everything out, It’s the perfect soundtrack to begin the 30th year of Om Records.

Part 2 of the Monomyth trilogy will take you on a road of trials. This is a favorite phase of the myth- adventure. 

Frenic has created a concept album in the Trip Hop tradition taking influence from a wide selection of source material that includes Hip Hop, Dub, Soul, Funk and Folk. This has all been crafted together using deep beats, scratches, huge dark reverbs and saturated lo fi sounds. 

Based on the book “A Hero with a Thousand Faces”. By Joseph Campbell the trilogy seeks to engage with the concept that all stories have one common theme and by understanding this your own hero's journey can be enlightened.
