Eine kleine Ode an die Bassmusik ist der neue Podcast von @lona_my, die 2022 den DAVE DJ Contest gewonnen hat. Mit ihrer Leipziger Crew bass focus sorgt sie heute dafür, dass der Nachwuchs erste DJ-Erfahrungen sammelt. Und das, nachdem sie erst selber 2019 mit dem Auflegen angefangen hat. Zum Glück, denn ihre Sets, die mit der Formal "deep, aber vorwärts" tatsächlich gut beschrieben werden, sind düstere, aber seelenschmeichelnde Wohltaten. Das könnte durchaus auch an an ihrer Vorliebe für episches Beatmatching liegen, wie auch der Mix hier eindrucksvoll unter Beweis stellt.

Manchester based DJ/producer Antagonist cues up a collection of dense and uncompromising electronic tracks on his R&S Records debut. The ‘Rites’ EP pulls together 5 new tracks that lean on the artist’s drum ‘n’ bass roots and influences, a sound that has informed his DJ sets and studio productions since he launched the project in 2004.

Channeling his productions towards the more cinematic and darker side of drum ‘n’ bass and broken beats, Antagonist has released a strong run of EPs for labels such as Samurai Music, Ronin Ordinance, One. Seventy and his own Discipline imprint, stamping his hybrid sound across these well received releases.

Layers upon layers of shadowy ambience and wistful tones are punctured by hard edged beat-science, as Antagonist goes in deep on the complex breakbeats, chopping back and forth knifelike loops and dynamic kicks. A highly accomplished debut for the R&S label from this sonically exciting young producer.

curator Alexander Pehlemann: "Bad Schandau, located near Dresden on the Elbe, was the GDR border crossing station en route to Hungary by train. On the return journey, Bad Schandau often proved to be a bottleneck, when guards confiscated Western records purchased in Budapest, a place of longing regarding subcultural products, because of suspected anti-socialist content.
Naming a project like an express train speeding between places and times as cultural transfer, connecting the sounds of the 1980s with those of today, after that (non-)place was obvious, primarily because the Hungarian post-punk band A. E. Bizottság immortalized Bad Schandau in a song, albeit with an additional “a.” Their LP Jégkrémbalett, released in 1984 on Hungarian state label Start and on which “Ba(a)d Schandau” can be found, was the departure point of the idea to create "Art Pop Tribute" cover versions. From a lifetime dedicated to the craft of jungle and breakbeat culture, Yorobi steps up on Sneaker Social Club to deliver her first solo EP. Her prior outing on wax alongside Tim Reaper in 2020 built on years immersed in the scene as a DJ, from her first moves on pirate radio and at underground dances in Amsterdam through to her frequent presence at vital dances like Rupture. She’s worked with the likes of Sun People and dropped heat on labels such as Repertoire, Planet Wax, Parallax and Exit, but now is the time for her to present the full scope of her creative vision across five expansive forays into inventive D&B abstractions, mutant electro and inverted ambient soundscapes.

There are familiar threads detectable in melodic brushstrokes or sharply angled drum edits on these tunes, perhaps calling to mind the most innovative corners of the Logical Progression compilations, a splash of braindance here or a hidden corner of a Photek LP there, but such impressions are juxtaposed with idiosyncratic swerves which make Yorobi’s work entirely her own. Drawing on intensely personal themes through her own rendition of the traditional spiritual ‘Motherless Child’ and indulging her own tangential experiments deconstructing 80s dancehall, reflecting on the limitations of psychology and channeling her inner Aphex, Yorobi runs at the extended play format with an unbound energy which makes for some of the most effervescent, inventive rollers we’ve heard in a long time. If you thought everything that needed to be said in drum & bass had been already expressed through decades of drops, think again.
