DJ Merlín is an Electronic music producer based in Amsterdam. As an alumnus of composition and sound design, he has been sculpting a style that can be characterized as hybrid and animalistic. This style aims to stir up a wilder and darker side of the dancefloor, creating a sonic ambience of experimental yet accessible rhythms and riffs.

Next to being an artist, DJ Merlín is the programmer of Amsterdam collective Kraft.und.licht . Whether it's deep in the Amsterdam forest or in the hull of an old freight ship, they bring together the right ingredients of audience and artists.

@the-oblong are known for their impressive collection of hard to find records, as showcased on their YouTube channel of the same name. London based, when not digging they spend their time in the studio producing or running north London party Splitloop. The next entry in our mix series is a selection of some of their favourite prog house, trance and breaks records, recorded entirely on two technics 1210s.

Tony Neptune is a multi-media persona created by the Leeds-based artist and producer Sam Jefferies who, inspired by the narrative and musical legacies of early Detroit techno culture, aims to tell a complete story for the senses through a combination of image, sound and text. @tonyneptune68

Adam Antine is a dj, musician, promoter & vinyl label owner who’s been putting out releases for the past two decades with releases on Pleasure Garden, Future Form, J00F, Baroque, Proton, Highway. Later, as a member of the Sonnen Blumen Kerne project he released four vinyl records on Nara Records, Hypnologic, Techfui, and more recently made a number of releases on Holding Hands, Otake, Simple Things, Mixcult & R&S records. 

This is a real journey through the years!

Our next mix comes from a returning guest and a key part of the On Ro extended family, No Moon. Alongside iconic releases for Mechatronica, Craigie Knowes and Salt Mines, he has recently launched his own label, releasing club slammers on the No Moon Mean Series and warm house, IDM and ambient on the No Moon Cute Series. He's a fantastic DJ and someone we're always happy to run into, and we're very pleased to be able to present you this live recording. Some words from the man himself:

I'm very pleased to be able to share with you the recording from my set at Tag, Chengdu. I was meant to play for 3 hours but the recording ends abruptly at quite a high moment due to the club getting shut down by the police. Needless to say that was quite a memorable experience in itself and I also expected not to get a copy of the recording after that happened. But yeah such an honor to play there, and really happy to have the recording to remember it with as well.

Some background, I recently got the opportunity to travel around China and play in a bunch of different cities. The trip was pretty intense playing in 9 clubs in 3 weeks, which is also a very big difference to the amount I have been typically playing in the last couple of years. One of the things I've always considered important in DJ sets is improvising and not just playing something pre-prepared, but when you only play a couple of times a year this becomes really difficult. So yeah it was really great to have enough gigs in a short time to try and play like this again. Tag was the 6th show of 9 so by this point in the trip I felt really comfortable. The recording is full of new and old classics, blends and little snippets I'd worked out over the course of the tour, and even a rare instance of me playing a No Moon track. I hope you enjoy listening to it.

We’ve been trying to get South African talent @portable-aka-bodycode on the podcast for ages, and we’re delighted to finally snare him. As Portable, his mixture of deep house and deep techno flavours, occasional snatches of African rhythm and his haunting, moody, vocal style give his tracks an inimitable sound, and this glorious mix takes you from his deepest moments to some of his most heady. Formerly of !K7 Records, Live At Robert Johnson, Dial and Perlon to name but a few, his sterling reputation continued with the recent ’The Transit Of Mercury’ album on his newly-minted Khoikhoi Records label.

*How would you describe your sound?*
Music that elevates into another plane of thought, via rhythm and future primitive tones. 

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

It’s pretty broad, but generally speaking anything outside the norm — be it film, nature, music or art.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

The majority of the material is from the last year or so and from my own label Khoikhoi Records, which is named after a tribe of South Africa, the region where I grew up and are my indirect ancestors, so the selection of tracks represents this new independent phase I am in.

Something to warm you up as the days get colder... my set from our June event in memory of our beloved resident and friend Alex T, live and direct from the basement of Wire. 

I played second to last and hadn't heard loud music in months so was about 12 sheets to the wind by this point - cue an unplanned smush of over excited mixing and super loose track selection 🙃

As always, a combination of long-forgotten oldskool tunes and tracks from mates with a couple of party bangers slipped in for good measure.

TESS009 Teamwork - Volume I

It's been a rollercoaster year for us here at On Ro HQ. The year began with us losing our resident Alex T to meningitis and a global lockdown, and there were many points where we considered throwing the towel in for good. On reflection, we realised that this would be the last thing Alex would want us to do, and in his honour, On Rotation is set to come back firing on all cylinders. 

The first course of action we took was to appoint a new resident, Adam Pits. Adam has been a close friend of On Ro since we took on his production partner Lisene as a resident back in 2018 and had already been involved behind the scenes at our events for a while so this decision made perfect sense and happened so organically we didn't even plan it. This mix shows off his characteristic blend of trancey sounds with a bass-heavy, UK aesthetic and is the perfect way to welcome him into the fold. This is the first mix in our restart of the podcast series so if you sent one of us or Alex a mix previously, please get in touch so we can get the ball rolling again!

We already have a LOT of exciting projects planned for 2021 and beyond and can't wait to share the next evolution of On Rotation with you soon! Watch this space :)
