@anna-rose-wirth has made a bit of a name for herself over the last year or so, throwing her epic WHOMP parties across London, with all profits going to amazing charities, primarily those supporting disadvantaged children in Nepal, by giving them the chance to seek an education.

Besides being a brilliant promoter, ANNX is also a pretty wicked  DJ herself. ANNX’s distinctly hazey, sexy sound, recently tore down the lovely Above Below festival and we’re delighted that after gawping throughout that set she allowed us to share the recording. Plug IN 💋

It’s springtime in the southern hemisphere and today we’re celebrating it with a mix from London-based DJ, Anna Rose (aka ANNX). 

We’ve been admiring Anna’s mixes for some time - her flawless mixing and the relentless collection of the best progressive & psytrance. We’re lucky enough to be able to share a recording of her set from this year’s Above Below Festival in Chiltern Hills in the UK. Anna played 7-9pm on The Beacon stage, and woweee it’s making us wish we were there to witness this set as the sun went down.

Inspired by cities and dancefloors where she's lived and explored, @annx-anna-whomp selects sounds from dance-centric genres from trance, prog, psy, deep-techno, electro, tech house through to dubstep and drum and bass. With driving psy-rhythms and seductive hypnotic beats, her selections reflect her extensive music knowledge and unique sound. 
 

ANNX has appeared on line-ups in the UK and France including Gloria @ Macadam, Down to Earth @ The Love Inn, Above Below Festival and many more with her unique sensual sound has gained visibility in the underground trance scene and beyond. 
 

In 2021, she founded and now co-runs WHOMP with Lora Mipsum, a charity-led dance party in London raising money to sponsor disadvantaged children to go to school in Nepal. She also hosts a bi-monthly radio show on Narr Radio exploring the 'Sound of Whomp' showing the variety of her eclectic taste. In 2022, she founded MAGICK with Amphybian, a series of two spell-binding psychedelic parties, hosing Jane Fitz, Spekki Webu, Garçon and Different Shades.

DJ Merlín is an Electronic music producer based in Amsterdam. As an alumnus of composition and sound design, he has been sculpting a style that can be characterized as hybrid and animalistic. This style aims to stir up a wilder and darker side of the dancefloor, creating a sonic ambience of experimental yet accessible rhythms and riffs.

Next to being an artist, DJ Merlín is the programmer of Amsterdam collective Kraft.und.licht . Whether it's deep in the Amsterdam forest or in the hull of an old freight ship, they bring together the right ingredients of audience and artists.

Adam Antine is a dj, musician, promoter & vinyl label owner who’s been putting out releases for the past two decades with releases on Pleasure Garden, Future Form, J00F, Baroque, Proton, Highway. Later, as a member of the Sonnen Blumen Kerne project he released four vinyl records on Nara Records, Hypnologic, Techfui, and more recently made a number of releases on Holding Hands, Otake, Simple Things, Mixcult & R&S records. 

This is a real journey through the years!

Rotation 043: Adam Antine

fleika grew up during the heyday of Prague’s rave culture, coming of age as a DJ in booths built for a single night only. The Czech techno renaissance formed him, then the newly-born club culture embraced him as one of its main protagonists. The Ankali resident digs anything that kicks, melts or makes one’s mind trip, but mainly thrives on diving into the vast depths of hypnotic and psychedelic techno – as deep as it gets.

fleika shared a few words about the mix:
"I always enjoy having enough time to express myself, whether at live events or on podcasts. An hour is barely enough to dive into my favorite places. In this mix, I kept it groovy while exploring deeper territories, reflecting my outlook on life in general."

Andy Garvey is an Australian DJ, producer, radio host, and founder of the Pure Space label, a label dedicated to amplifying local talent while making waves internationally. 2024 has seen Andy playing across the globe with appearances at legendary institutions including Organik Festival in Taiwan, La Nature Festival in Belgium, Positive Education Festival in France, Berghain for her own Pure Space label night and this incredible appearance at Amsterdam’s infamous Ratherlost party back in August.

Bubbling with colourful shades of psychedelia and intoxicating euphoria, this high octane trip is a mind-altering expedition into the realm of hazy afterhours bliss. Turn the volume high and enjoy.

Our next mix comes from a returning guest and a key part of the On Ro extended family, No Moon. Alongside iconic releases for Mechatronica, Craigie Knowes and Salt Mines, he has recently launched his own label, releasing club slammers on the No Moon Mean Series and warm house, IDM and ambient on the No Moon Cute Series. He's a fantastic DJ and someone we're always happy to run into, and we're very pleased to be able to present you this live recording. Some words from the man himself:

I'm very pleased to be able to share with you the recording from my set at Tag, Chengdu. I was meant to play for 3 hours but the recording ends abruptly at quite a high moment due to the club getting shut down by the police. Needless to say that was quite a memorable experience in itself and I also expected not to get a copy of the recording after that happened. But yeah such an honor to play there, and really happy to have the recording to remember it with as well.

Some background, I recently got the opportunity to travel around China and play in a bunch of different cities. The trip was pretty intense playing in 9 clubs in 3 weeks, which is also a very big difference to the amount I have been typically playing in the last couple of years. One of the things I've always considered important in DJ sets is improvising and not just playing something pre-prepared, but when you only play a couple of times a year this becomes really difficult. So yeah it was really great to have enough gigs in a short time to try and play like this again. Tag was the 6th show of 9 so by this point in the trip I felt really comfortable. The recording is full of new and old classics, blends and little snippets I'd worked out over the course of the tour, and even a rare instance of me playing a No Moon track. I hope you enjoy listening to it.

Clarisa Kimskii is a Brooklyn-based DJ, producer and resident of both the Brooklyn-based, queer party Merge and Volnost in Seoul. Her pure, yet passionate approach to DJing has graced the decks at international institutions such as Berghain, Tresor, Basement, Khidi and Amsterdam’s Ratherlost party, plus festival appearances at Taiwan’s Organik Festival, North America’s The Great Beyond, Honcho Campout, Sustain-Release and Japan’s Rural Festival.

For MNMT 453 Clarisa presents an assemblage of both timeless and modern grooves, with ethereal ambient techno delicately drifting into a swirling vortex of trippy alien synths, expertly mixed for a propulsive and atmospheric trip.

Contributing our latest episode is London’s ANNX, a regular figure within the city’s cutting-edge undercurrent whose many contributions include co-curation of the Whomp, Perspectives, and once-shrouded Magick events, and a residency at the beloved Above Below festival. Anna’s tireless dedication to the scene goes hand-in-hand with her unmistakable talent behind the decks, as evidenced by an impressive repertoire of mixes and set recordings, and which I was fortunate enough to witness first-hand last summer in the Chilterns. Here Anna demonstrates her well-honed craft over the course of two meticulously plotted hours, diving seamlessly into manifold forms of deep, heavy psychedelia before emerging in a wave of euphoric bliss. Her commitment to the scene goes beyond the booth with her events being a staple for psychedelic music on London's club circuit. As well as co-curating perspectives• with Nicole Gordon, she founded and curates Whomp with Lora Mipsum and is part of the Above Below Festival music team.

For our opening mix, we’re delighted to share a recent Steam Room session with the Bangkok-based selector and producer Sunju Hargun. 

For two hours, he delivered a masterclass of immersive, deep and psychedelic techno. And true to style, the set is a seamless flow of intricate rhythms and subtly shifting textures, shadowy grooves and pulsating basslines.

Valerio Tricoli — Clonic Earth

The experimental Italian composer returns to PAN with a new LP, titled 'Clonic Earth'. His ongoing output for the label has long-presented his electroacoustic sound compositions where since the mid-'00s, he has utilized analogue live sampling and real-time editing of field and studio recordings by means of manipulation of 1/4 inch tape.

Asides from being a founding member of the Italian avant-rock group 3/4HadBeenEliminated, he has worked extensively with various musicians, choreographers and multimedia artists including Thomas Ankersmit, Antoine Chessex, Werner Dafeldecker, Anthony Pateras, and Robert Piotrowicz.
 
His studio compositions, documented on few records, often explore themes of the internal - represented both by the psychological and the physical - and of the occult, which with the use of spoken text makes them often deeply existential works, self-investigations of the psychological, emotional and irrational horror within.

The new record, 'Clonic Earth' is a perturbing, compelling and eventually mind-expanding work, marked by compositional strategies of exploded narratives, psychological insight and oracular literary references, where questions about the boundaries of spatial perception in the decoding processes of acousmatic music are overturned into existential, metaphysical questions. 

Tricoli's allegorical and philosophical universe takes the form of an unhinged mind's landscape swarming with estranged sound objects, and sometimes reminiscent, in the complexity of details and surrealistic effects, of Hieronymus Bosch’s larger paintings. Compared to his previous works, the content of 'Clonic Earth' explores more synthesized and heavily processed sounds, especially vocals, often appearing in the form of a religious, electrified chanting. 

The record is described by its author as a natural consequence of the internal collapse depicted in his previous record, 'Miseri Lares': "As if all the debris left inside my loudspeakers have been ignited to expand into the ether, to find a justification at the principle of Chaos, or Cosmos alike." 

This movement is expressed by references to the theme of fire as original matter in the Chaldean Oracles which, together with the later work of Philip K. Dick, are the main sources for the vocal/text elements of the composition. Fire, intended as the convulsive principle of existence, but also an ontologically terminal element - hence a representation of the infinite decay and a mean of communication with the otherworldly - serves the author a metaphor for the acousmatic listening experience itself: a borderline perception of sounds eternally fixed in their spasmodic disappearance, which could eventually drag us into a different layer of reality, drastically changing, subverting, or expanding the space in which they are diffused. A ritual, somehow, which may link the listener and the perceptive space that he inhabits with whatever lies beyond the loudspeakers, beyond the vibrating surface of the world.
