Mathematical equations are like sonnets says Keith Devlin. And, the mathematician says that what most of us learn in school doesn’t begin to convey what mathematics is. Technology may free more of us to discover the wonder of mathematical thinking — as a reflection of the inner world of our minds. Keith Devlin began to learn this as a teenager and he’s been a math evangelist ever since:

    "It was as if I'd been stumbling around in a forest, and suddenly I've climbed to the top of a tree and looked out and thought, this is the most beautiful place in the world. You can't tell it when you're down in the trees, which I had been, but the moment you reach an elevation where it all falls into place and you can see the topographic display in front of you, then the beauty is incredible. And the moment I discovered it, I said, I want to study mathematics. And I've been studying it ever since."

Educating The Heart

The Shaw Memorial 被许多美国人称作是19 世纪最伟大的雕塑。它塑造了罗伯特•高尔德•肖

些权利。

人的权利。奴隶制度使得我们民族意志中这种黑白有别的做法变得合情合理，因为黑奴根本就
没有被看作是人。他们是工具。他们像工具那样，被用来为他们的主人谋利，而工具是不需要
教育，不需要有文化，不需要有过去和历史，不需要有家庭，不需要有追求更好的生活的权
利，也不需要有自豪感和目标。工具甚至不需要有自己的孩子。他们不需要家庭。因此，可以
让他们妻离子散，可以卖掉他们的孩子。这些美国人受到的侮辱和非人待遇，正是奴隶制度的
恐怖和罪恶之处。美国人是一个受美利坚庇护的民族，就像我们认为自己的民族受上帝庇护那
样。现在，这个受美利坚庇护的民族，终于再也无法容忍这种黑白有别的做法了。

随着岁月的流逝，人们逐渐明白，要摆脱奴隶制的桎梏，需要进行一场伟大的斗争；而这场伟
大的斗争在1861 年以内战的形式降临到我们面前。当时，美国黑人仍然没有一点机会展示他
们的能力，没有机会向世人表明，除了肤色之外，他们和他们的白人兄弟是一样的，他们身上
流的血和他们的白人兄弟一样，是鲜红的。就是在这样的情况下，黑人被允许参加1812 年的
战争以及随后的一些战争，然而一旦战争结束，危险过去，他们就不能再参军服役。他们又被
送回到原处。但是现在，这场伟大的斗争就在我们面前，这是一场彻底废除奴隶制的斗争，正
是在这时，人们才明白，黑人必须参加这场斗争。

府无法接受的。
弗雷德里克•道格拉斯同样意识到了这个问题。他利用了这一点，他对林肯和其他人说，一旦
你给黑人穿上蓝色军装，给他戴上美国，即合众国的标志，一旦你给他系上铜头腰带，戴上军
帽，给他一杆步枪，给他一把手枪，让他成为国家的战士，送他参加战斗，保卫国家，维护联
邦的统一，一旦你这么做了，那么这世上任何力量都无法否认他们理应得到的公民权利。在整
个美国社会中，军队是唯一一个黑人和他们的白人兄弟平等的地方。
就这样，在弗雷德里克•道格拉斯的鼓励下，消息从政府传出，马萨诸塞州的黑人随即响应，
他们站起来了，数百人自愿入伍，参军的人数那么多，结果第54 兵团立刻就招满了人，只好
再扩招一个第55 兵团。我们看到的雕塑，就是1863 年5 月28 日，第54 兵团在他们的州议院
前列队行进，从他们的州长安德鲁斯面前走过，奔向南方，迎接命运和牺牲。在雕塑描绘的这
个场景过去7 个星期之后，瓦格纳要塞的战斗打响。结果领导着黑人士兵的罗伯特•高尔
德•肖牺牲在了战壕里。在兵团的600 名士兵中，有281 人伤亡，但是，他们展现了他们能
力。向世人展现了他们的能力。
在战争结束之前，约有 20 多万黑人参军服役，由于有他们服役，联邦的统一得以维护，我们
向平等又迈近了一步。黑人在军队里战斗牺牲，由此争取到了自由，但是，即使在第13、14
和15 修正案通过之后，我们仍然没有得到自由赋予我们的所有权利。为此，又花了100 年、
120 年、130 年的时间。
这样，我们才有了今天，我们看到了社会团结的巨大进步。现在，黑人在这个国家大有作为，
这方面的进步也是巨大的。我现在站在你们面前，我就是那些普通黑人的后代。我能够担任参
谋长联席会议主席，这个美国军队的高级军事职务，而我又是和第54 兵团的战士们，和革命
战争中的先辈们直接联系在一起的，这种联系，我永远不会忘记。
我由此受到了鼓舞，获得了力量，多少年来一直是这样。现在，这个非同平常的雕塑安放在国
家的首都，我希望它能继续鼓舞千百万美国人，不论是白人还是黑人，它提醒着我们那段永远
不应忘掉的过去，也告诉我们，我们走过了多远的路程。同时它也提醒我们，这场斗争还得继
续下去，直到我们实现开国先辈的理想——成为一个更团结的国家，一个最团结的国家。这个
雕塑描绘的是一个光荣的场面，一个奋斗牺牲的场面。它是我们的一段历史，把它安放在这
里，安放在我们国家的首都，是最恰当不过的。它鼓舞着青年人和老年人，鼓舞着全体美国
人，也鼓舞着全世界的人来到这里，欣赏这件非凡的艺术品。能来此参加今天上午的这个纪念
仪式，我深感荣幸。

The surprising psychology behind morality is at the heart of social psychologist Jonathan Haidt’s research. “When it comes to moral judgments," he says, "we think we are scientists discovering the truth, but actually we are lawyers arguing for positions we arrived at by other means.” He explains “liberal” and “conservative” not narrowly or necessarily as political affiliations, but as personality types — ways of moving through the world. His own self-described “conservative-hating, religion-hating, secular liberal instincts” have been challenged by his own studies.
