I give because I love to.  Not because I feel obligated.  I love Christmas it's the time of year that is the best feeling.. I believe it's because of God's son. Jesus is the reason for the season.

Great commentary.  I feel the same way.  I'm a pastor who loves and admires Jesus, but I try my best to have as little to do with "Christmas" as possible. No tree.  No lights on our house. The culture gets itself all stressed out during this season.  Just isn't my cup of tea, I guess.  My kids seem to understand and appreciate our approach to this season and the simplicity we try to employ with how we conduct our home. Glad to know there are others who share this viewpoint.

We live in a culture of denial and youth. How can we find a freedom of heart in this world of birth and death? We can start by acknowledging that everything is subject to change. Death is an advisor that can give us clarity about what really matters.

We can be the loving witness of this life, yet not cling to it. We can cherish life, yet in the end we will have to let go.

As Mary Oliver writes:

To live in this world
you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

In May of 2016 I made a trip to record in the wilderness of Mount Carleton Provincial Park in Northern New Brunswick, Canada. Recording among these woods, wetlands and streams was a joy, seldom have I experienced so much natural silence. This is a small section of a 10 minute recording of morning bird song in the Acadian Forest of Mount Carleton. Some of the birds you hear include the Purple Finch, Pileated Woodpecker drumming, Ruffed Grouse, Brown Creeper, Ovenbird, Black Capped Chickadee and Magnolia Warbler, the woods were full!
