This Summer

James Ferraro paints a 21st century still life on his debut album for Hippos In Tanks. 

The record is called Far Side Virtual. Each song, a melodious reflection of the moment NOW, comes shrink-wrapped in HD fidelity as glossy as a 2012 Toyota Prius. 

Ferraro’s muse is some enigmatic modern metropolis, where the streets are as slick as i-Pads, and where the symphonies ring with Macbook message alerts. Through the steam rising from our latte mocha chinos, he invites us to gaze out at the dreamy disorientation of our digital lives. 

Imagine a Darius Milhuad-guided tour of 5th Avenue. Imagine a Whole Foods bakery that sells only cakes emblazoned with frosting replicas of Camille Pissarro's “Haying at Eragny.” These are the surreal utopias Ferraro brings to life with sixteen swirly-pop concoctions sure to sell out at the candy stores. So slip in your ear buds, and welcome to Far Side Virtual.

voices in the tandem probably maybes what i tell them 

picking them at random spin the arrow what it lands on then ill trail on 

setting sail from out the alcove 

long days and dark nights what I count on 

and through the depths the light beckons from the mountains 

poseidons light beacons, fountains underneath us 

feel aquatic and anaesthetised, fighting for me feeling, 

kneeling, numb between my feet and thighs 

Compass glass splintered as it meets me eyes - 

shit im needing guidance. 

 tide licks, shudder, boat rocking side to side 

and in my mind yeah i think it's where the ride ends. 

seagulls cry, hope through my closed eyes 

a wave like a golem's hand smashing through the boats side. 

ropes fly - lashing like the 9 tails,  

drag my under down like the nose diving crow flies,  

tangling my limbs now. shit i might as well just swim down,  

great deluge relinquishing our sins. 

thinking all these things, either sinking or you'll swim 

but fate has handed me the dot so time to flow round!

I feel like I'm finally nearing the end of production on my album Evergreen; everything is recorded, and now it's just a question of final mixing and mastering.  Here's a more or less final version of the song that started it all, Sail or Anchor.  Fun fact: much of the percussion is recordings of Ann Druyan's brain waves from the Voyager golden record, combined with tiny (< 1 second) snippets of ASMR videos ripped from Youtube.
