The oneyedcats do not take their name lightly. Clarah Averbuck, writer and singer, is constantly getting knocked around by life, but always lands safely on her paws. And there you have it: you know that cliché of love meaning mushy romantic music? Well, that’s not the case. Not at all. The songs of the ensemble - which also features bassist Bruno Bandini, Fernando "Tristessa" on the piano/rhodes/hammond, drummer Jorge "Anzol" and guitarman Pedro "Limão" - capture various aspects of love: celebration, intensity, fierceness and, why not?, agressiveness. If you stop to look at this (non)formula, you’ll find something that is endangered in our times of industrial mass-pasteurization. The oneyedcats spontaneously evoke the classic era of vocal Jazz - a little bit of Billie here, a hint of Ella there - without trying too hard. This may come as a result of the duo's recording style. They have no problem recording their songs in the dead of night, in the living room or wherever inspiration comes. But the band is not an isolated unit. In “Comes Love”, the violin of Hique Gomez (Tangos e Tragédias) underscores the dramatic aspect, whereas Douglas Godoy (Vanguart) brings a glow to “No One But Me”, which he recorded and mixed. The oneyedcats will be recording an album this year, featuring astonishing guests. - Paulo Terrón
