This track was made using mostly samples from some really old 78rmp discs I inherited from my grandparents. They were cracked and scratched, so I recorded some of the noise they made on my turntable to the computer and processed it in Ableton. One track is a short sample that seems to be a B note, with an 8 band EQ envelope adjusted on the timeline to make it sound like the note is changing. The other track is a simple sine wave synth bass drum, which is feeding the sidechain compression on the other track. There are 2 other tracks in the work-in-progress that I deleted; both were percussive elements taken from the sampled vinyl surface noise.

The original piece was an early sketch called 140621-space2:  https://soundcloud.com/markrushtoncom/140621-space2 - it was only saved as a project file and was never rendered into a recording.

For the purposes of this Junto, I recorded out 140621-space2 as a reference point.  It's definitely unfinished to my ears.

I saved off a copy of the project so I could make "A Small Box of Chocolate Bunnies".  Out of the five samples in the project file, two were completely quieted.  I might have made a slight volume adjustment in one of the remaining live samples, but not much.  After recording, I made some adjustments in overall volume and faded the ends.

With the headphones on, this does sound rather like something that might be in the background of a Lynch movie.  It's quite textural and dark.

The original Ableton-File was over 2 years old; I removed a drum loop and a bassline and fiddled way too long with EQing and Mastering.

**Disquiet Junto Project 0144: Eraser Head**

The Assignment: Remove parts from an unfinished composition to create a finished composition.

This week’s project achieves productivity by, in effect, doing less.

The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Choose a recent recording that you think of as “incomplete” or “unfinished.”

Step 2: Remove two things from that recording.

Step 3: The result is a “finished” piece of music.

Step 4: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud. If possible, include a link to the original “incomplete” or “unfinished” version of the piece.

Step 5: Listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow participants.

Length: Your finished work will be roughly defined by the length of the original, though it should optimally be between one and five minutes.

My piece for the Disquiet Junto Project #146

I was thinking the symbol for swiping 'silent' was a bit chaotic and a bit paradoxical. So the piece touches on the idea that even when it is dead silent all around us the mind is still chattering away - especially when trying to go to sleep, meditate or just concentrate. The result is build on the creation/swiping of the word silent, but the result reflects the elusiveness of true silence.

1 - I made this piece with ReNoise, and used the key mapping to map out the notes to be used.
2 - First I played out the notes which were hit in the swiping of 'silient'. A single note at a time, and if the key had no note e.g. f is silent being in between D# and F#. The pattern was 26 notes long. I played this into ReNoise as 1/4 notes and adjust the pattern to 160bpm. I used vocal sound from Alchemy for this pattern. Eventide Ultrachannel plugin was also applied.
3 - Then I played the word silent over that pattern - 7 notes with one note every 15 16ths. I used another vocal sound form Alchemy. This is the nnnnnnn sound (night putting). Ultrachannel and Valhalla Shimmer were applied.
4 - I repeated the pattern made from the two patterns above seven times, and played one letter from the word 'silent' at the beginning of each of the seven patterns. I used a pad from Alchemy and used PanCake 2 for panning. Ultra Channel, Ambience (reverb)were also used.
5 - The first pattern was alternated with staccato voices in the second iteration and the third pattern was played an octave lower in the second iteration. 
6 - I repeated the pattern in 4 twice and then added one extra pattern for fade out.

Three From One Swambi

Single live track = Sound of 12 FireFoxes battling for CPU cycles. Minimising the windows doesn't stop them, but has drastic effects on the tempo. Maximising them all makes them glitch along eccentrically, in a manner I found satisfying.

OK - so it's mobile and cross-platform (if it works with your browser at all...) but, sheesh, 8-bit micro's sure did it better!

Wasted couple of hours trying to reverse engineer a local cached version of the app; to apply own sound sets, or modulate the controls algorithmically. Concluded there was no point.
