We are pleased to introduce the new guest of our mix series - Naks. As the artist himself says, he is the contribution of the Finnish forests to the list of Berlin DJs.

Naks is the co-founder of the notorious Vortex Traks label, and also hosts a series of Dreams of Neon parties, which is broadcast live on intergalactic.fm radio.

Mixes of our guest can be heard at many well-known music venues in Europe. After nearly two decades of collecting music, Naks specializes in italo, acid and electro.

This VA release marks the beginning of a collaborative process.
Contrary to other releases, nobody decides who is good or fitting enough.
Instead all artists participate in a joint feedback process to improve on their tracks, until they have reached a level at which they feel comfortable releasing.

As the title indicates, each track is a reflection on the musical taste, life situation, and production ability of each artist.
Over time - with more releases - we'll be able to see all artists grow.

Hollow by witness

Dub reworkings and versions of Trepanation For The National Health; the tracks shaken to pieces and pulverised under layers of bass and impenetrable walls of echoes.

Is There a Ghost in the Dub House?

When you think of Natural Selection, Michael Silmon is one of the people you have to thank for its existence. As one of the founders of the collective, Natural Selection is now in its tenth year, returning frequently to Canning Town with killer lineups after having migrated south with Silmon from Newcastle where it was formed in 2010. On the many occasions that we’ve invited Natural Selection to host nights at FOLD, the result has always been an incredible marriage between sounds, our threads woven together to create a blazing tapestry of sonics that seek to pay homage to the legends and veterans of the scene. 

Meanwhile, Michael’s performing alias, Kodah, is doing equally as well. Brought up upon a diet of hardcore and gabber which was prevalent in Newcastle when he was a teen, Michael satiated this interest initially by collecting tapes from the raves that were running at that time. This inspiration from collectives such as Rezerection and Judgement Day became the primary creative motivations in discovering his musical vocation, and went on to seek how to develop this, eventually entrenching himself deep within the experimental, warped allure of techno and electro. A common face at UNFOLD, his most recent set at our 6th instalment back in November was unforgettable, reminding our community of why we took him on as a resident at FOLD; he is an artist with true knowledge, passion, and appreciation for the past.

For this DETECT accompanying mix, Michael recorded a very special hour of towering, alien selections from his own home in isolation. Keep your ears peeled in particular for the closing track; as he put it himself when he sent this over, this mix was the precursor to an exquisitely Good Day, and he hopes that the message speaks for itself, and that it precedes only positivity to those who listen to it.

DETECT [003] - Kodah (Natural Selection)

Assembled from a variety of textures, tones and spaces, akin to a collage of different materials, yet whole and organized as if originating from a unified point – "stasis" is a collection of 12 contributions from 9 artists flowing inside a single cassette tape. Glimpses of the currently motionless world are revealed throughout the works, a frozen moment unraveling the detail in composition and subtlety in improvisation within each piece of sonic poetry. Suspended in time, each detail and form is captured superlatively real, movements are petrified and musical notes echo across infinity.

Antonello Teora is a versatile, always-surprising DJ and producer from Italy, with his own variegated, wavy and bass oriented style forces to put the attention on the sonic landscape he carries on while making music. 

“In Ethereal State” is the album's 2nd track and is highly representative of the mood of the whole release “The Way of Union and Being”. This 9-track journey finds its roots deliberately between “Gloria Anzaldùa's” idea of repetitious act and the philosophical scriptures of “Musashi Myamoto”. His idea about the open-minded vision and the centrality of the mind built the concept of the LP. Every human being has to keep firmly in order to have an always clear and objective perception of life.

Instead of computing the new path to their destination, the onboard computer named "K4RL" decides to synthesize a new Electro song and deliberately chooses not to think about the crew's mission. So they got lost and had to hitchhike to save them from death.

No.12 in our series comes from the mighty @foldldn resident @Jamesnewmarch, full on technical whizz and fearsome presence behind the decks. Having made a name for himself with diverse, nuanced no-holds barred sets, he slows things riiiight down to bring you all a tasty chuglection of sleazy, grinding tunes mixed with class and finesse.

Before the pandemic, he'd been gaining serious steam alongside FOLD bossman @voicedrone, taking the energy from their monthly UNFOLD party as far afield as Berlin, Ukraine and Poland. Prior to joining the FOLD family, he was resident for afterhours party Jaded at Corsica Studios, taking audiences right to the edge with slamming techno.
