Weston may not be a name that is widely recognized yet, but it's one that we’re certain has a very bright future. Hailing from Kelowna, BC, he is another example of this region’s immense and deep talent pool. Previously releasing music under the moniker Subclaim, Bryce has been continually improving his chops and working with other producers and vocalists. He has released music on Mat The Alien’s stellar Really Good Recordings and has also remixed Aufect alumni, Half Normal. When he sent us this juicy demo we knew the time was nigh to start working together. ~
This EP is a collection of 4 precision engineered cuts - A perfect balance of Deep and Dark atmospheres that’s lush, warm and brimming with character. These tracks brought us back to the era when we first fell in love with Dubstep and serve as a reminder to why the genre is still alive and well. Weston has enlisted the immense talents of MC Ill Chill, vocalist Sarah Zad and fellow Kelowna-based producer, Toltek on the EP and it shows this young producer’s adept skill in really unifying the tracks and creating a compelling, cohesive package. ~
The EP starts off with the title track, “Ritual”, a dark and brooding Dubstep anthem featuring Ill Chill’s signature baritone refrain over top of sparse but precise drums and mega tonne sub bass. An ode to the magic herb that BC has become well-known for. “Electric Vibration” brings the intensity down and smooths out the vibes with mellow instrumentation and an haunting saxophone riff. Sarah Zad’s buttery smooth verse recounts a deep passion and the magic of a shared love. Ill Chill’s verse tells the other side of the story and we’re left wondering where the wet spot is. “Judgement” is a moody Dubstep stepper that is cloying with it’s simplicity, yet it’s haunting chord stab and sparse vocal stay with you long after listening. Lastly, “Spectraminds” sees Weston and Toltek link up to create a unique, psychedelic footwork cut. Interesting polyrhythmic kicks provide the foundation for saturated bass stabs and an hypnotic arpeggiated sine wave, punctuated by dripping FX stabs.

Open Hatch is by far my favorite song on the EP. It is also the fastest song I’ve ever produced (1 day). Have yourself a listen to it’s smooth pads and tight percussion making it the chillest track from the EP.
