Although dawn was just breaking, the beach was abuzz with activity. A swarm of surf enthusiasts and their shieldlike boards had gathered like a phalanx on the shores in anticipation of what was to come that day, hoping to be the first to catch the perfect waves that were set to soon crest atop the glistening tropical waters for the ride of a lifetime. Rumors abounded as to why the waves had come, from the mixture of a myriad of perfect climatic conditions to the arrival of a singular school of mystically empowered fish to the reef that lay beneath them. Whatever the case, with the rising of the sun came waves of greater and greater magnitude and a cacophony of cheers from the beachfront as the first boards were launched into the maw of the roaring ocean.

As the idyllic day continued above the waters a sinister presence circled below, its eyes gazing hungrily at the ovoid shadows that flit above the water. The native sharks of the reef, normally content to feed on the buffet of fish that it housed, were afflicted with an unnatural hunger. Thus it was that when the perfect moment presented itself, they struck, abandoning their solitary ways and falling upon a poor hapless surfer as a ravenous pack. The small jaws afforded by their shallow habitat tore chunks of flesh from the surfer’s body in a death by 1000 cuts, and yet the mercy of death would not be granted to this thrillseeker. As he returned to the shore, bloodied and with protruding bones, many fellow surfers flocked around him to question his condition. In response, all the surfer could muster was “the waves… were so… GNARRRRRRRRR”, before leaping upon his compatriots with the selfsame bloodlust of the sharks which had granted him this new and unending hunger.

MNDSCP returns to EATBRAIN with the three terrifying tracks that make up his latest EP, GNAR, summoning a deluge of subsonic sound waves for the label’s horde to feast their ears upon from the biting bassline of FLESH EATER to the high power percussion of HAZE.

It's safe to say that it's not often a label, platform and thriving talent hotspot like Pick 'n' Mix comes along. It's a special place, both for those involved and for us on the outside who witness their influence on a musical, cultural and societal scale. In fact, to just refer to PnM as a label is a complete understatement; this phenomenon is much, much bigger and influential than that. Step-by-step, they are quickly progressing and transforming into one of the most critically important platforms in Drum & Bass, taking all its connecting facets and stratas in their stride. Spearheaded by head-honcho, label boss, proficient selector and all-round tastemaker TJ Campbell, PnM have been championing the most promising 174 talent for almost 2 years now, linking up with scores of now-essential producers, among them the likes of Vital, Sota, Hexa, Kontakt, Master Error, Parallel and GAW.

But, as we mentioned, the team at PnM pride themselves as something more than a label; they’re an incredibly diverse, socially-aware team of ultra-talented creatives, working from the ground up to make the scene around them a better place, creating a space that is accepting of every individual - TJ has become a voice for those that need it, and that has to be commended. One of the outcomes of this is PnM’s next expansive project - ‘The Black Excellence LP’. Built from the ground up as an encyclopaedic compilation, this new collection shines brightly through both its content and its foundations. The LP is comprised entirely of BAME and POC creatives, taking in everything from the artists and vocalists themselves, all the way through to the album artwork (a beautiful piece of art hand-drawn by TJ’s father), the mastering (done in it’s entirety by MYKOOL), the A&R process and the promotional campaign. It’s a staggering, momentous celebration of talent, from artists that roam within the refines of Drum & Bass and beyond. The culmination of this is an emotional, pinpoint collection of meaningful, tantalising art, that will surely echo throughout this much-loved scene years after its release; a startling equilibrium of the underground sound.

We’ve been lucky enough to link up with TJ and the PnM crew for today’s exclusive premiere, an upcoming full review and also an imminent interview as part of our ‘Check The Label’ feature. Premiere-wise, we’re delighted to host the opening track from the compilation; the self-aware, on-point ‘Do The Most’ collaboration from two of the most exciting young talents about, London-based producer Lost Child and Guildford-hailing micman Kyst Cortez, who are both making serious waves right now. Flitting between Lost Child’s rolling, junglist tendencies and atmospherics and Kyst’s sparring, effervescent flows, they’ve produced a sure-fire lick of the very highest calibre.
