Drum & bass is often reassuringly structured and formulaic; tracks made up of beats, bars and phrases. These units of musical measure provide the foundations for MCs and vocalists alike to lay their souls on the line. Jaye ‘Siege’ Balmer has spent his life in the 16 and returns to Soulvent with another 4 track EP, underpinned by some stellar production, that further brandishes the hype-man’s ability to get lyrical.

Opening with a slew of varying hi-hats, ‘Drawn To Leave’ is an emotive tune that sees Siege reflect on his past in an introspective fashion. Calming keys and warm low end provide the perfect setting for these expressive musings. 

‘Plastic People’ is a weighty club belter with punchy drums and simmering, twinkling synths. While the lyrics explore the idea that not everyone you meet is as they appear, Siege’s carefully crafted bars also complement the swelling bassline with the meticulous, ready-for-anything approach of a certain well seasoned international spy. 

‘Wide Open’s rousing intro has all the hallmarks of a euphoric dancefloor banger and the  infectious vocal hook will no doubt have you singing along within a few listens. A welcome melodic change of pace for the Bristolian bar slinger but an equally successful transition. 

Last up, ‘Template’ colours outside the lines providing the grittier, tearout element of the EP. Smatterings of vocal intersperse the glitchy, pulsing soundscape on offer, producing a satisfying and hypnotic final product.

PREMIERE: Chillhomers 'Tell Me' (Command Strange Remix)[Live History Records]

At theethousand.co.uk, we continue to remain extremely proud of our efforts to continuously explore the full breadth of underground dance and bass music in search of bangers to discuss for you here on the site. Our quest often takes us far and wide, from the distant realms of electro house, back through all the way to the dungeounous deeps of the dubstep world, which we visit again today as we take a peek at the latest drop from Manuka, one of Manchesters most exciting label imprints to emerge over the last three years.

Headed up by Hypho and Xakra, the label has seen a steady, solid run of top quality releases since it's inception, with the mantra seeming to be to explore the space inbetween 4x4 and dubstep, pulling together some exciting themes and incredible compositions with a truly original vibe. Today we are getting involved with premiere duty on their latest drop as they invite the Mineapolis based Ternion Sound inside to deliver a three track wash of bass heavy goodness, this time exploring a much more UKG inspired set of rhythms which we simply can't get enough of.

Today's premiere sees us take 'Exploration 52', a computerized garage hybrid, slapping together an arrangement of well thought out, techy drum leads with some purposefully distorted bassline manouvres and some groovy melodic ideas to create an absolute animal of a riddim for the dance, making us keener than ever to return to the raves as soon as possible

We feel there definitely isn't enough priase being placed onto labels like Manuka who continue to push the boundaries of what underground music can be, with this premiere being a perfect example of that.

Straight out of Florence, Italy, OOH are a label that stand high upon their own mountain top. Across their growing catalogue, spanning twenty releases and counting, they bring a highly curated, avant-garde vibe with sound design lying at its core. They have played host to artists such as Peder Mannerfelt, Dale Cornish and Sim Hutchins among others. Continuing such a thread, they now prepare their twenty-first release from french duo, Glass, entitled 'crY' EP. 

Recently debuting with independent French label, Sante Records,Glass present a body of work that is full of meaning on 'crY' EP. Not simply a collection of productions but an expansive investigation into sound in the broadest sense. In their own words, 'crY' EP is 'a response to an explicit impulse to investigate modern commodification beyond its soothing, enjoyable and relaxing facade.' This can certainly be seen in Glass' sound design, juxtaposing elements of weirdo techno, jungle and experimental with nuances from gaming and other electronically related worlds.

On track 'Appointment Scheduling System', Glass have parsed a modernist take on jungle. The immediacy of unrelenting drum patterns pairs with raw samples from everyday life. Tension is built in the syncopation of elements from laser stabs to door knocks, the track is a pummeling fistful of energy.

[A] Kaii Concept – Thinking About U:
The Nu Dawn EP series returns with its 4th installment and opens with an NVR newcomer Kaii Concept and his track Thinking About U. A Liquid Drum & Bass track with inspiration deriving from the funk era, which becomes evident from the get go, as you are immersed in catchy synths and addictive vocals. Continuing to explore the experimental side to his production style, Kaii Concept contributes to the Nu Venture catalogue with an uplifting energetic tune featuring funky bass lines, elevating pads and a rolling dance floor beat to complete the unique feel good groove of Thinking About U.

[B] Ground Unit – Nostalgia:
Ground Unit returns to Nu Venture Records to present his emotional Liquid Drum and Bass track Nostalgia. From the beginning the all embracing natural strings from the intro emit a warm feeling and strong sense of sentiment, alongside the sweeping female vocals, as the sombre nature of this track begins to reveal itself. The drop releases a deep bass and mesmerizing synth pluck along with the atmospheric strings to culminate in a compelling feeling of nostalgia reminiscent of days gone by.

[C] Foreign Shores – The Palms:
Foreign Shores presents a feel good Liquid Drum & Bass track that opens with a soft chord progression and playful arpeggios, before dropping into a deep and dark bassline, working in tandem with the chords and twinkling arps. Progressing from the drop we see the introduction of a bright and catchy sax solo coming to the forefront to personify the enthusiastic nature of this track. In the build up to the second drop a lead synth is teased that punches through the mix with some minor undertones before returning to the positive and rolling vibes that The Palms exudes.
