On August 11th 1973 the godfather of Hip Hop DJ Kool Herc threw a party that was to spawn a worldwide movement. In 2013 Hip Hop turns 40! 

To honour this DJ Woody launches his new audio-visual DJ show as an ode to the music and culture that changed his and so many others' lives over the last 4 decades. 

'Hip Hop is 40' chronicles and celebrates all things Hip Hop. 
From the original breaks to the first rap records and through the eighties, nineties and noughties party rockers up to todays future classics.

Building on his groundbreaking video DJ shows 'Turntables In Technicolor' and 'Big Phat 90's' and utilising his trademark edits, animations, graphics and World champion turntablist skills. This is Woody's most ambitious show to date!

Back in 2011 Baltimore emcee Substantial was facing the possibility of cancer. He ended up having preventive surgery and while laid up, decided to start working on a tribute album to Jill Scott, one of his biggest influences. It was his was of staying busy while healing, and at the same time to give the people their roses while they can still smell them. The result is a free project Substantial calls "Jackin' Jill" - a tribute project from Substantial built by "Jackin" music from various Jill Scott releases. This collection of reworks and remixes of her work blended by DJ Jav form a cohesive pseudo collaboration focused on life, love & music.

Today, as Substantial heads back into the doctor's for a follow up examine 2 years later, we are unveiling the cover art (drawn by Substantial himself) from the 17 track project, plus a taste of what's to come with the track "Golden Lady" a reworking of the amazing Stevie Wonder track from "Innervisions" that Substantial uses to play off the track Golden from Jill Scott's Beautifully Human album (the last song Kool Herc played at Substantial's wedding). Substantial adds to this Marcus D produced tribute track the gorgeous vocals of Steph The Sappic Songstress. Be sure to listen to Marcus D on piano throughout as well. The result is a richly layered, beautiful new track from one of Baltimore's most thoughtful and talented artists, Substantial.

In 1993, years before anyone told ya’ to “get up off them goddamn diamonds”, South Jamaica, Queens, craziest Bal-Hed sons, ONYX, were already busy takin’ some of the Golden Era’s loot and running with it to new heights, stamping the term “hardcore” in its darkest terms upside hip hop’s head with their seminal, trailblazing platinum debut, Bacdafucup.

 

The iconic cover image of four bald, angry-lookin’ niggas, their legendary “MadFace” logo, a shoulder-strapped automatic and a menacing boot-tread took rap to a world that could “Slam” in an era where even looking at someone wrong at a rap show could get you gone. Fredro Starr, Sticky Fingaz, SonSee and the late brother Big DS didn’t break the rules: they scared them the fuck away.

 

Twenty years and several full-length underground classics later, there is still nothing so raw in live rap as getting tossed into the barrier by the smiling, sweating, maniacal fans swarming the pit, to find yourself face-to-face with the ever-Mad Faced, ever Bal-Heded ‘Dro and Sticky (and this summer, on the Rock the Bells tour, Sonsee).

 

Face to face with loud, abrasive greatness, you might just find yourself lucky enough to embrace a boot to the temple when Sticky stage-dives, or swimming with the sharks to make waves for the crowd surfers while you “Throw Ya Gunz”.

 

ONYX made boom bap gangsta, gave metal street cred, and exposed the kinship of hip hop and punk rock cultures to a wider global audience on the strength of their delivery and the look in their eye that said this was no gimmick, motherfucker – all under the guidance of their mentor and producer, the departed architect Jam Master Jay.

 

With the Snowgoons-produced Cuzo LP hot on the way and the custom-built hybrid project Black Rock in the aisles and their newly-minted international “100Mad” click growing stronger, 2013 sees ONYX bring it back-da-fuck up in your mad face. Watch out, ‘cuz they’re coming for head-blood.
