FALLING OUT OF THE UNIVERSE

Hampshire psychedelic shoegaze trio Is Bliss continue to cause a stir with the release of new EP ‘The Honeycomb Explosion’, released 19th May on celebrated label, Club AC30. 

Having received rave reviews for last year’s debut release ‘Velvet Dreams’, produced by Pat Collier (The House of Love, Primal Scream, Swervedriver), the band’s rise has been swift having formed in late 2015. The band were soon signed by acclaimed London based independent record label Club AC30, a label that has a habit of developing artists from the psych/gaze/electronic & dream-pop genres including such acts as Pinkshiunyultrablast, Ringo Deathstarr and Flyying Colours.

With a shared love of Slowdive, Spacemen 3 and Verve, Is Bliss’s first year has seen the band turn heads with their explosive live shows and have supported the likes of Wolf Alice, Telescopes, Nine Black Alps, Mark Gardener and Robin Guthrie in a whirlwind twelve months. The band have also received radio support from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft and Radcliffe & Maconie at BBC Radio 6 Music along with BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio. 

Building on the success of the band’s debut, ‘The Honeycomb Explosion’ opens with the soporific ‘Someone’ that echoes The Warlocks before giving way to effervescent guitars and wig-out drums.

‘Alive (Baby Come On)’ hypnotizes and mesmerises in equal measure, providing a heavy dose of visceral sound; a spaced-out sonic groove as Stuart pleads ‘I can’t satisfy your love’, to a backdrop of deafening feedback guitar. 

The dreampop of ‘Into A Dream’ glitters 60s-like with guitars that turn into waterfalls of sitar and full on, psych induced vibrations before the mystical and magical ‘Tomorrow’ is a trip into the unknown conjuring up a drug-induced utopia.

The EP closes with ‘Inner Soul’, a hazy, mind-altering trip with Stuart’s vocals immersed under a wall of reverb and fuzzed-up guitars, his vague poetry only adding to the atmosphere of the EP throughout. 

With a support slot lined up with The Jesus and Mary Chain in April plus more live dates and festivals across the UK and Europe throughout 2017, the band’s heavily anticipated debut long player is pencilled in for release later in the year.

Drink Hard

Following on from the blown out psychedelic infused ‘Rapture’ released earlier this year, Exit Calm return on 23rd September with ‘The Future Isn’t What It Used To Be’ out on Club AC30. The Barnsley based quartet return bringing with them an evolution of their sound that reaffirms their position at the forefront of British guitar bands. 

Immersing the listener straight into the tripped out mesmerising world of Exit Calm, ‘Rapture’ opens the proceedings with pulsating bass and blissed-out drums that set the tone for the rest of the album. 

From the cavalcade of musicianship throughout and on the breakbeat-tinged fury of ‘Albion’ to the Bunnymen guitars and groove of ‘Fiction’ the songs illustrate their passion for emotive song writing that invokes the spirit of their influences. 

‘The Promise’ arrives with a swirl of 60s meets shoegaze that sits immaculately alongside stadium rock amidst post-rock and psychedelic tendencies. The cacophonous guitar and bass lines are set perfectly against the pounding percussion of ‘When They Rise’, ‘Rapture’ and ‘Holy War’.

Producing music with heart, style and integrity mixed with the euphoria and hedonism. The talent of Rob Marshall’s haunting guitar work and the fluid rhythm section weaves between the raw but compelling vocals of Nicky Smith that have made them a firm favourite on the live circuit. 

Exit Calm have supported the likes of Modest Mouse, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Boxer Rebellion and Soulsavers and taken to the stage at V Festival and Tokyo’s Liquid Rooms to name a few.
