Splits is a new series of releases from OO Recordings that focuses on connecting two artistic minds into one split release.

The first installment is a Nordic affair with Iceland's Jónbjörn on the A-side and Finland's Torolf Stendik on the B-side. Though stylistically operating in different shades of electronic music, both artists share a knack for relentless experimentation, ingenious use of their chosen array of sounds, and Nordic quirks that are hard to put a finger on. The release spans a spectrum of glitchy experimental with hints of IDM and minimalistic techno with industrial twists on the A-side,  whereas the B-Side combines slower, downtempo-ish tracks with deeper house cuts with acid tips.

Having been fans of both artists for years, we're more than thrilled to present to You the meeting between two mind-bending talents. The release is mastered by Noah Kin.

INFORMATION ON THE ARTISTS:

Jónbjörn
Jónbjörn is an Icelandic DJ/Producer based in Reykjavík. He has been previously seen on releases on such labels as D.KO Records, FALK, Neo Violence, Lagaffe Tales, and pompon records. Together with Viktor Birgis, Jónbjörn runs Lagaffe Tales and sub-label BROT.

Stylistically, Jónbjörn is known for a fine blend of 90’s IDM and industrial soundscapes, with a healthy dose of contemporary techno and electro in the blend. His productions are airy and even minimalistic, yet still driving and heavy. Time spent behind the decks, as well as years lived in Berlin, have shaped Jónbjörn into a producer that effortlessly balances weirded-out experimentation and dancefloor-friendliness. Breezy like a northern gust on the shores of Iceland.

Torolf Stendik
Speaking of windy coastal towns, Torolf Stendik hails from Vaasa, Finland. One of the many alter egos of Vesa-Matti Kivioja, Torolf Stendik has previously appeared on stellar releases on Meltdown Deejays and Studio Barnhus. 

Combining a dub-inspired and playful approach to sounds with an off-kilter way of structuring a dance track, Torolf Stendik provides a weirded-out form of Nordicness. Torolf Stendik’s music feels like a constantly shape-shifting amoeba that can take you from point A into outer space in a span of minutes. Each track on the release - as well as pretty much each track of Torolf Stendik in general - feels like another step on a trippy night out.

Splits 1: Jónbjörn & Torolf Stendik

OO Recordings returns with the second edition of Splits - a meeting spot between two creative minds. This time around, we’re representing the vibrant local scene of Helsinki.

Kicking things off on the A-side we have emkay. Also known as Gem-K or Maria Korkeila, emkay is taking the listener into the depths of house and electronica, both with a unique and cheeky touch. emkay’s minimalistic (but in no means minimal) approach to electronic music, combined with her playful lyrics creates a state of musical being that is hard to pin down into a singular genre. The key to emkay’s sound is the way it invites the body to interact with the sound, from subtle swing to full-on body-rocking.

B-side features Stuster's takes on contemporary electro and acid. It’s what music with a sophisticated bang should be all about during the 2020’s Stuster's cuts lace heavy kicks with digi-synths and acidic basslines, and manage to bring together something from the very early days of electro with something very current. Stuster’s sound in general combines the creative thinking of a mind from the digital age with an interest in sounds of the past, always with a relentless attitude to taking things forward - both in sound as in dancefloor response.

All tracks on the release are dancefloor friendly but for very different moments of the night. The tracks share a subconsciously communicated ethos, perfectly summarizing what the Splits release series is all about.

Kicking off 2023 with a true 'new year, new me' spirit, Fleur Amser presents his debut EP on OO Recordings. Alternative Ending consists of four tracks that portray Fleur Amser's - real name Nestori Majoinen - pathways in music. From mellow pad-driven ambiances to dark and punchy basement sounds to experimental takes on dance music and beyond, the EP is a flip book of Fleur Amser's musical ambitions and in general, tells the story of a creative soul that wanders between styles of electronic music with his own uniquely groovy step.

OO Recordings enters the cassette game with a gathering of friends from Helsinki and close by.
Founded by SMOOD & Handshaking, OO Recordings serves as an outlet for emerging names and
dirty­little secrets of more established artists from our local scene and for our friends from various
other locations.

The ethos of the first release is to function as a zeitgeist from our creative lives in these times. Thus,
we were more than thrilled to have such a great group of people collaborating on the first tape. Many
of the tracks are end results of fresh collaborations as well as outputs of bold experimentation.

The A­side kicks off in the company of DJ Jese & Elli with the track Jungel. This is a mixture of arps
and strong percussions and forms a DJ­tool­esque structure. It sounds just like a collaboration
between one of our favorite DJ’s and a multi­instrumentalist should. Continuing on the A­side is
another new collaboration, this time formed by the Friendship & Decadence affiliated Mirage Man
and Veli Pietari who has previously spent more time mainly in the hip hop scene. The result of the
team effort is a studio jam with a lo­fi­ish feel, possibly titled after a source of inspiration Wenry
Heston. Wrapping up the A­side, the label founders from SMOOD leave you with a touch of melodic,
yet melancholic vibes in their track Nk10 Tones.

The B­side starts off in the company of two young and very promising producers. Order 909 and
Virne take a step towards a more laid­back soundscape with Mesi, but still manage to subtly flex their
musical abilities. All those years spent at jazz schools are clearly paying off. Following up, one of our
mystery contributors drops a burner with hefty kick and a synthline that longs for something long­lost.
Edit View History likes to keep his identity hidden, but we can safely say that he is one of the active
operators of our local underground scene. Another mystery producers, Neo Geo, follows Edit View
History with a track that he simply described as ‘modern art’. Finishing off the tape, label co­founder
Handshaking takes a head­on approach into the weird, yet dancefloor­y side known from his live setv
with his track Time. His boldness is further amplified by the use of his own vocals, with one line
especially resonating with this release and the aims we set to cover with it; I see time.

The space was elegant, the marble which lined the room was tasteful and so too would the evening be. This had been coming for a long time, the annual dance, a chance to showcase eccentricity and precision on the floor.

It was the opportunity for transformation, when men and women were one and would move in time to the simple beat of a drum. This was not queer, not straight, not anything. It simply existed in a space and time in which all were free and equal. The game was on...

Miro-Benji features on a new compilation from OO Recordings, a label based in Helsinki, Finland which is helping to champion and showcase talent across dance and electronic music in the city. The compilation is a subtle assortment of house, electronica and beyond. The release comes in tape format. Comes packaged in silk-screen printed cardboard with a special info leaflet inside.
