Portal Episode 40 by Markus Suckut and XDB

This hybrid DJ / Live Set was recorded in a yurt structure at the Freerotation Festival in Wales. This time my idea for the set was to take us all much further out, much deeper inside than the set from last year. A more disembodied experience. 

As I had done last year, I sat on the floor in front of the speakers to perform instead of behind them as a DJ normally does. This greatly enhanced my feeling of experiencing the set with the audience, dissolving the usual performer / audience divide.

Sandrienはアムステルダムで活躍するテクノDJの中でもトップDJの１人である。アムステルダムのナイトライフ・アイコンであったTrouw Amsterdamでの約5年間のレジデンシーを終え、ローカルの人気DJからインターナショナルなテクノ大使へと成長した。今でもホームタウンのシーンを大切にしている彼女は、オランダ各地でヘッドライナーとしてプレイする他、Berghain、Nachtdigital、ロンドンCorsica StudioのMachine、パリのConcreteなど活躍の場を広げている。Sandrienは1999年にDJとしての活動を開始し、彼女単独や"Is Burning"イベントのパートナーでもあるDJ、Carlos ValdesとのパーティでDJを始めた。今は無きClub 11ではCarlosと共に"MAD2"という人気パーティを開催。2010年にTrouwからの誘いでアンダーグラウンド・テクノナイト"Imprint"を毎月開催するようになり、数年後には多くのオープンマインドなクラウドを惹き付ける人気イベントとなった。Trouwでの長期に渡るレジデンシーは彼女の才能と多様性の確固たる証拠でもある。冷えきったフロアを一瞬にして盛り上げることができ、ショートセットでもロングセットでもどちらも抜群に上手くプレイできることを証明してきた。言い換えれば、彼女のプレイを見た者ならばどんな夜でも特別な夜にしてしまう彼女のすごさを疑わないだろう。

-こちらのミックスはどちらでどのように収録されたのですか？

家でTechnicsのターテーブル2台とCDJ2台、A&HのミキサーXone:92を使ってレコーディングしました。


-コンセプトがあれば教えて下さい。

日本、特に東京を想いながらミックスしました。前回日本に行った時本当に楽しくて、私にとって特別な国なんで。日本の人はすごく暖かくて優しくて丁寧で、音楽に対しての熱意も感じました。とてもすてきな所だと思いました。日本の暖かさや優しさを、このディープでちょっとトリッピーなミックスで少しでも表現できたら良いなと思っています。


-最近の活動を教えて下さい。

昨年開催されたアムステルダムのクラブ”Trouw”のクロージングパーティー以降いろいろな所でプレイしてきました。ベルリンの”Berghain”でのギグはすごく良かったし、ロンドンの”Village Underground”ではMarcel Fenglerのレーベル〈IMF〉のパーティーにも出演しました。今はオランダで親友のCarlos Valdesと一緒に「Is Burning」というパーティーのオーガナイズを担当しています。東京AIRでの「terminus」でのプレイすごく楽しみにしているよ！

The Poeticast returns for Episode 127 and we are delighted to welcome Hydrangea to the podcast.

Hydrangea is a French electronic producer, making techno music deeply inspired by nature and its surroundings. She began producing music in early 2014, influenced mainly by the deep and hypnotic techno landscapes.

Hydrangea has released her debut album on the Annulled Music imprint, called 'Dawn Lights', a sensorial trip that captures each of your senses. She also released an EP on Two&Two Records and tracks on VA compilations. 

Besides being constantly preoccupied in reshaping her sound and developing new ways of expression through music, she's also a graphic designer and photographer under the alias Horty Shooter, managing the artworks for different music releases and graphic art projects.

Episode 127 is a fantastic peregrination through an ambient soundscape that defines Hydrangea's work in the studio and live performances.

Hydrangea has had work released on Annulled, Absolute, Hypnotic Landscapes, Silent Seasons, and most recently Accent Records. The latest EP can be acquired on Bandcamp:

The Poeticast - Episode 127 (Hydrangea Guest Mix)

Eindhoven’s Albert van Abbe has been involved in many different musical projects over the past 15 years. Currently focused on making absorbing techno under his own name, he has found a unique creative niche where manic percussion, searching synths and wide open soundscapes exist in perfect harmony. There is a serenity to his music that is soothing and calming, while at the same time, arresting and experimental. Besides his own VANABBE and No Comment labels, he has released on tasteful outlets like Curle, Semantica, Deep Sound Channel and ESHU.

van Abbe is also a live performer, speaking volumes through his machines. Recently, he has performed live shows at Berghain, Awakenings and ADE. When not crafting melancholic and salubrious atmospheres of his own, he brings this depth outwards, hosting events titled DRUM.

Luca Mortellaro a.k.a Lucy is one of the driving forces in the European techno scene, being the founder of the established Stroboscopic Artefacts imprint and having a strong back catalogue of releases under his name that sit comfortably in the world of innovative, hypnotic techno. Yet, describing Lucy in such manner does not fully encompass his current goings-on. Moving away from a darker and more dystopian edge, Lucy is moving towards a warmer sound instead and presenting a fundamental change in his output. Stroboscopic Artefacts recently launched a new 10-inch series, named Totem, which marks the label going into this distinct space with the first release by Lucy himself, to be followed by another release by L.B. Dub Corp later in the year. Lucy’s Truancy Volume showcases the change in approach travelling through an eclectic range of music. He describes the mix as similar to the Totem series – to be something more physical, as something that makes him move, featuring tracks by the likes of Eomac, Actress and two forthcomings of Lucy himself taking the listener on an hour and fifteen minutes long journey. We caught up with Lucy to discuss change in direction, both in his label, as a selector and as a consumer, his Totem release “Tarkomania” and his collaborative work with the likes of Rødhåd and Rrose.
