"The passivity of the ear allowed auditory impressions to force themselves into consciousness in season and out of season, when they were interesting to the dominant desires of the animal and when they were not. These impressions got further into consciousness, so to speak, before desire could examine their right of entrance, than was possible for impressions which could be annihilated by a wink or a turn of the head." 40 Since noises have this intrinsic and commanding interest, and the ear cannot be closed, they were peculiarly well suited to become "free" items where they had no biological value, and to be utilized by the imagination in sheer play." 40: Donovan, "The Festal Origin of Human Speech," - 1891
