'Oh man, I’ve got good news all around! First of all, even if there wasn’t anything to celebrate, this mix from Heathered Pearls is absolutely superb! Almost two hours in length it navigates many favorite genres and artists represented by the Michigan based label, Ghostly International. Just look at this amazing tracklist! In 2009, Ghostly celebrated its 10 year anniversary as a label, with many shows across the globe. This year, the label is commemorating a decade of performances at Decibel Festival. The 10th Ghostly showcase at Decibel will feature live performances from Dauwd, Beacon, Lusine and Shigeto (Friday, September 27th at the Crocodile) and you know that I’ll be there all night!

Meanwhile, Jakub Alexander (that’s Heathered Pearls), a curator of the ISO50 blog and founder of Moodgadget Records, has just released a digital remix album, titled Loyal Reworks, featuring many great artists, including Sun Glitters, loscil, Markus Guentner and Lawrence. "The songs in this mix remind me of specific places and contexts where I first heard them, or where I fell in love with them. The opening track, for example, brings back a vivid memory of driving through the night from Amsterdam to Paris while on tour, on the day of the Brussels airport terrorist attack in 2016. I remember feeling very far away from home, chaotic, and strange. AAMAR’s track “Home” was the perfect calming and introspective piece of music for that surreal moment in time. As we slowly head into the post-pandemic world where traveling, and touring if you’re a musician, is once again considered a normal thing to do, I thought I’d revisit some of my own memories of travel and discovery through music. It is also a fitting theme for my upcoming new album as Arms and Sleepers, which is titled “former kingdoms” and drops on May 10. The record was written exactly 25 years after I first immigrated to the US and is an attempt to memorialize that ultimate journey in my life which changed me forever. Solid Steel (19th December) Coldcut return with a special 2 hour mix to end another great year on Solid Steel and a late contender for Mix of the Year. Matt Black steps up with a suitably broad selection starting with a laid back opening from Tokimonsta, Thundercat, Slugabed and The Free Design. I'm often asked in interviews what my early influences were.
If I could have made a mixtape years ago like the ones I've been making more recently, then it would probably have sounded something like this.
71 tracks in 75 minutes, with mashups of up to 4 or 5 tracks playing at the same time.
Features many legendary artists of the time, from DJ Shadow, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Orbital through to Portishead, Luke Vibert, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Shy FX & UK Apachi, Bonobo, 4hero, Adam F, Amon Tobin, Chemical Brothers, Red Snapper and Aquasky - with some Classical, Folk and Choral music, and Moondog, The Beta Band, Donovan, Jive Bunny, Velvet Underground, Herb Alpert and classic jungle thrown in.
Apart from appearances from Brian Eno and Derren Brown, this mixtape doesn't feature interviews and field recordings like the other mixtapes in the annual series, but it does still feature acapellas from J-Live, KRS-One, Common, Roots Manuva, Choclair and more.

I’ve made a little ambient mix of some of my all time favourite peaceful music.

The mix was originally made for a clinical trial for people undergoing something of a reconstructive therapy. It was designed to repeatedly and slowly transition between relaxed reflection, and stimulation of new thoughts, running for a 2 hrs 30 mins session. You’ll probably hear what I mean in the structure.

It also includes some unreleased music of mine which hasn’t been heard before, alongside many of the most beautiful pieces I could find. I hope you enjoy it.
