This week JR talks about his recent trip to USA & Mexico and a chance meeting that inspired some of this weeks music selection. He dips into the usual off kilter rhythms, a short ambient zone out followed by some kraut rock and Italian acid jazz. Then after a big session going through promos he plays a selection of his favourite new minimal house and wraps up with the sort of music an android would use to seduce you. Each episode is broken into four segments, which are connected in some fashion, but routinely unique in many others. This allows for the drawing of comparisons between otherwise disparate concepts, while simultaneously creating enough creative restrictions to focus the musical selections.

Category 4 w/ Phil Yeah - Episode 21: Collaborators

This mix is dedicated to Ryan Lee who reignited my love for this music way back in OODE VIII.

Not an especially great mix technically but the cuts speak for themselves. This is my favorite style of dance music, and somehow this is the first time I ever played a pure set of it in front of a dancefloor full of friends. It won't be the last(that's either a promise or a threat depending on how you feel about all this).

All vinyl except for Noise Overload and Force Mass Motion (couldn't find it). I meant to play The House Crew - We Are Hardcore but the flip isn't so bad.

~ About The Story ~

A 'Campfire Story' largely inspired by a couple of recent trips to Norway. Firstly to Oslo and also to Trömso, which is sometimes referred to as it's own Detroit on account of its rich legacy of electronic music (Geir Jenssen is a famous son). Myself, I returned reflecting on the beauty of the country and with new music acquired on route; some of those records are included in this mix. Its also quite varied, consistent with my own diverse taste for deep music in all its guises. I trust you’ll enjoy the journey and thanks for listening! A sincere “thank-you” to Jamie too, for giving me the chance to share my passion.

Giving the “musical journey” a proper host, Mattheis’ absorbing Techno adequately defines how the road not taken can somehow dodge the (exhausted) cliches. Methodical and even-tempo, his exquisite sound employs muddled bass vibrations with crisp tonal presentations. Mattheis' soundscape is as unique as untouched terrain. His fidelity seems to pleasantly pull from his Rotterdam landscapes, from industry to rolling fields of green. In his case, the best of these properties coalesces with personal inspirations to create a tangible opus. Mattheis is musically involved around the clock, as an artist by day and tech enthusiast by night. He discusses with Torture the Artist how productivity can reach its height when space is made for creative freedoms and his current release: Lettre Ouverte. Similar to his other work, his hour-long art:cast encompasses a meditative stroll that exudes dynamism via serenity and vitality. However, the truth of Mattheis’ poetic composition is slammed through his ambient experimentations and atmospheric personifications.
