Medlar, the alias of South London producer Ned Pegler, has spent over a decade quietly shaping the UK underground with a warm, sample-rich sound rooted in deep house, jazz, and disco. Emerging via Brighton’s drum & bass scene, he found his true voice on labels like Wolf Music, Delusions of Grandeur, and Full Pupp where tracks like “Terrell” and the 2013 LP Sleep revealed a deep, emotive producer with crate-digger instincts.

In 2025, Medlar expanded his sonic palette with Islands, an 10-track album fusing 80s fusion, ambient, afro rhythms, and live instrumentation. Collaborations with artists like Dele Sosimi, DeeVoeNay, and Finn Peters reflect a shift from sampling to organic arrangement, while maintaining his distinct warmth and groove.

Beyond the studio, Medlar is a passionate vinyl digger and eclectic DJ-his sets span jungle, italo, garage, and dub. With every release, he bridges eras and genres, reminding listeners that house music, at its best, is timeless and exploratory.

London-born and Tokyo-based, Max Essa has spent over two decades crafting lush, melodic soundscapes that blur the lines between balearic, cosmic disco, and ambient pop. Emerging in the '90s on Warp and Paper Recordings, he found his true artistic stride after relocating to Japan in 2008. Since then, Essa has become a central figure in Tokyo’s underground scene, curating events like Zim Zam Zu! at Bar Bonobo and releasing music on labels such as Music For Dreams, Hell Yeah!, and Is It Balearic?

Essa’s style is warm, escapist, and deeply cinematic-often inspired by specific places: Okinawan beaches, Mediterranean ferries, or late-night Tokyo rooftops. His releases, like Lanterns, When I'm Homeward Bound, and The Clean Trip (with David Harks), radiate nostalgia and serenity, wrapped in silky synths and timeless grooves.

Beyond producing, Essa curates, mentors, and connects cultures-compiling Japanese ambient gems on Oto No Wa, together with Ken Hidaka and Dr Rob, and spotlighting local artists through interviews and collaborations. Whether on record or behind the decks, Max Essa invites listeners into a world where emotion, space, and memory guide the rhythm.

At We Out Here in 2021, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy's Love Dancin' tent saved me from a very ropey day I was having. I was so grateful for and inspired by the positive vibe and music of the tent that day that I decided to put together a mix for her, on cassette tape, like we used to back in the days, to give to her at her next Loft Party in London. Unfortunately that day she suffered a nasty head injury from a collision with a turntable (live by the sword...) and had to leave early, so I left it with her partner...

Since that day at WOH, I've dreamed about playing in that tent and this year the dream has come true! I'm playing with my beloved Balearic London crew on Saturday 16 August 2025 in Love Dancin' ahead of Colleen and one of my all-time heroes, François K. So it felt like the right time to finally upload this mix. It has a disco vein running through it, in keeping with the Loft spirit, but was more specifically inspired by Colleen's set that night. I loved seeing her in peak time mode and hope the sensual, organic flavours in this mix reflect some of her energy. It features many of my favourite tracks of all time, and a few of these are definitely shortlisted for my playlist this year. I hope you enjoy it and a huge thanks again to Colleen and WOH for inviting us!
