Although Fiestas Patrias (Peruvian Independence Days) begins on the 28th, I thought it would be a nice excuse to start the festivities a bit earlier by dedicating this Late Horizon episode to Peruvian music. It’s something I have been wanting to do for some time now. This idea sparked up to take you on a journey over coasts, mountains, cliffs, lakes and valleys, through rivers, and jungles all the way back to the vibrant and ever-growing beautiful monster that is Lima. I will try to do so by covering a wide spectrum of genres, from Afro-Peruvian to Andean folk, cumbia/chicha and salsa, psychedelic rock trough experimental and electronic styles. Winds guiding us to north, east, south and west. Happy dance music, contemplative music and melancholy, love and heartbreak, it’s all there. Connected with pulsating cosmic energy, founded in ancestral roots and blended to where we are now. Not that I want to portray it as a paradise, there is still a lot to fight for in the process of moving forward towards a more equal and progressive society. Poverty, racism, classism, stripping away indigenous rights, corporate greed, multinationals polluting the environment, a suffocating and ever present corruption on many levels. I will try to implement this boiling civil/political unrest in my set as well. At the same time acknowledging that this is all from my kind of outsider point of view, being half Peruvian and born and raised here in the Netherlands. Anyway, Peru has always been this infinite source of inspiration for me, and I will try to share this passion wherever I go. I know that for many of you this will be an introduction to Peruvian music in general, hopefully I can transcend some of the spark I feel inside me with you. My door is always open for anyone who wants to chat/share music while eating a Peruvian meal :) x

Matt started playing records back in 1996, after taking influences from the UK techno clubs at the time, The Orbit, Atomic Jam, and House of God. He played at a few parties including the Total Eclipse festival in 1999 and various other free parties in the south of England. In 2001 decided to leave the UK and go traveling, playing at some of the free European festivals that summer. During this time-traveling, he met up with a group of like-minded Dutch people and joined their sound system. Since this moment he’s been organizing free parties in Holland and traveling through Europe with their sound system, visiting many free festivals. In 2006 started his label Tonal Research as an outlet for his own productions, but at the same time was building up a passion for dubstep.
