Disco Mind is a young but already standout label and now it is back with Feijão Amigo, another must-have EP featuring Brazilian gems expertly reworked by two of Brazil's top edit maestros in Joutro Mundo and Bernardo Pinheiro. Pinheiro kicks off with 'Fogo' which is big on funk and brass and perfect for peak time, while his second cut 'Diga Amor' is a lively rework guaranteed to move you. On the flip, Mundo offers 'Santos Da Guine' which has been sourced from an ultra-rare record and elevated by a subtle touch-up. During the 35 years of making music, Dave Lee has constantly been searching for new singers and writers to work with. A search that’s ended up with many fantastic collaborations and releases with the likes of Thelma Houston, Taka Boom, Dianne Charlemagne and Seal. More recently this quest led him to Maurissa Rose and the creation of their album ‘London / Detroit’. After hearing Maurissa's voice on a Theo Parrish record Dave reached out to her and after a few long phone conversations and mp3 swaps, they both agreed a visit to London would be much more fun than trying to work together remotely. Maurissa made the journey from her home in Detroit to write and record an album with Dave at his studio in March 2022 - as they both feel that creating music together in the same room is always better. The fruits of their labour yielded 11 brand new songs (and 1 cover) tapping into their collective love of Soul, Disco and R&B, with a sprinkle of Soulful House. This album is a special one for Dave Lee as it’s the first time in his career he’s recorded an entire album with the same singer on every track.

In the album’s liner notes Dave talks of how Maurissa is a naturally creative person, full of ideas, warm & unpretentious which is reflected in her vocal performances throughout ‘London / Detroit’. Dave’s expertly crafted music is backed up with a deeply passionate yet effortless delivery from the Detroiter, a marker of someone who has honed and perfected their art. When it comes to the music side of this LP, Dave Lee is once again proving he’s still at the top of his game and shows no sign of relenting. Drawing from his encyclopaedic knowledge of all things Soul/Funk/Disco, we are treated to a range of styles, BPMs and influences from 95bpm street soul to more uptempo disco and boogie flavours. Be it the rippling synth voyage opener of ‘You Decide’, taking the Johnnie Taylor classic ‘What About My Love’ into a modern Boogie realm, upping the tempo on the soulful houser ‘I Feel the Sun” or bringing the tempo back down to the bassy acidic chug of ‘You’re Giving Me Life’. Mr Lee is truly adept at creating a modern disco soul sound without the usage of samples.

London and Detroit might be two very different cities on opposite sides of the Atlantic but this album is proof that creative synergy knows no distance.

In 1980, fresh off a weekend stretch of Doctor Who reruns and a slightly expired bag of mushrooms, Billy Noknees burst into a London studio claiming he had finally cracked it.

“I’ve got it,” he shouted, bursting through the door in a galaxy-print cape.
“The answer to life. The universe. EVERYTHING.”

Producer Gavin “Bang” Thimble, accustomed to Billy’s grand declarations, merely sipped his tea and hit record.

What followed was The Message—a three-minute, bass-drenched, celestial soul-funk odyssey in which Billy, despite promising revelations about the meaning of existence, sang nothing but elongated vocalisations.

The track begins with a drum break, the drummer just willing the rest of the band to start. Billy enters like a prophet floating through space, arms outstretched, eyes wide, and mouth full of the divine.

And then…

"Ooooooohhhh… Aaaaahhhhhh… OOOOOHHHH… AAAAHHHHH…"

That’s it.

No verses.
No chorus.
Just Billy, moaning melodically like a man on the edge of revelation but refusing—refusing—to put it into words.

Midway through the track, the band swells into a full-blown cosmic jam, complete with interstellar bass, laser guitar riffs, and a triangle solo played by a man in a silver bodysuit who no one remembers hiring. Billy levitates (emotionally), eyes closed, still singing:

"Ooooooohhh… (rising!) …Aaaaahhhh… (descending!)"

Gavin Thimble begged for lyrics. Any lyrics. But Billy simply whispered:

“Words are too small for what I know now.”

The record label refused to release it, calling it “a choir of sheep in space”, and the master tape was boxed up and shelved. Billy defended it as

“the most honest thing I’ve ever sung.”

For decades, The Message became a whispered legend—The Song With No Words, The Silent Truth, Billy’s Broken Enlightenment.

That is, until 2018, when a master reel labelled “DON’T BOTHER” was discovered in an old studio basement in Kent—right behind a box of disco flutes and a broken coffee machine.

Now remastered with the magic of AI, The Message is presented in all its glorious non-specificity. The original sleeve, designed by Billy himself, features a painting of a pirate ship, for no reason whatsoever.

So sit back. Breathe deep. Let go of meaning.
Because sometimes, the answer to everything… is just a vibe.

I first met my soulful stellarsonic "Partner In Chime" (Soulpersona) back in 2006 when I was studying A Bachelor Of Popular Music Degree in my Honours year at Griffith University on Australia's Gold Coast. He found me through Myspace and thought my style was "off the chain" so he sent over a track for me to give a geeze that was to become the saucy slow-steppin' "Candy Wrapper". After he'd heard it, loved it, and wanted to continue this international digital dalliance, our creative collaborations expanded into a full-blown MUSEical relationship that would see me transfer to UKingdom's shores to further pursue my career... and to meet Soulpersona for the very first time, 5 years later!

I hope you enjoy pepper-peeping these as much as I thoroughly revelled in co-birthing them. The fated collision of Freesh and SoulP was destined to change my life forever, in only the HOXXXIEST ways! :)
