Hollow

SHADOWS

Primer is the alias and creative project of vocalist/producer Alyssa Midcalf.

With her debut album, Novelty, Midcalf showcases her skills as both a vocalist and songwriter. The sound of the album, which was composed heavily on a Roland Juno synthesizer, is characterized by driving drum beats, sub-heavy bass lines and shimmering synth leads. Midcalf’s vocals are airy yet dynamic, binding her songs together with a reverberating surrealism. To see these elements on full display, look no further than her haunting cover of The Beach Boys song Til I Die. 

Partly inspired by the indie time travel film of the same name, Midcalf says she was also drawn to the sense of futurism the word Primer invokes. This is fitting with the tone of her debut album, which brings to mind images of a dystopian disco. 
 
Midcalf, who gained some attention as one half of the duo Parts, made her introduction as Primer with the single Anesthetized, released on YHS Records in 2018. Her full album, Novelty, is set to be released on YHS Records in early 2019.

Our next premiere comes to us courtesy of the legendary Austrian label @TRUSTvienna who already have 35 vinyl releases under their belt beginning in 1998. Their newest effort comes from another Vienna-based duo calling themselves @Microthol.

The TRUST roster is no newcomer to Electro music with previous releases from @The-Exaltics, @Mohlao, @Conforce, @DJ-Dijital-1, @Clatterbox and @DJStingrayofficial. This time around Microthol carries the torch with 4 brand new tracks for the imprint. The duo, who started producing in 2003, have a strong showing as well having released 9 of their own records almost exclusively with TRUST. The pair constantly stun connoisseurs of Electro with their vintage synth sound and unique approach to composing. Not a single synth-preset is to be heard on this record, that is for damn sure. 

The track selected by @DarkScienceElectro to premiere is the doom-laced track 'Dissonanz'. This track absolutely shines on this release for its clever use of percussive modulation and interesting approach to melody, using mostly the bass line and industrial screeches/sweeps to give creepy, ambient body to the track while vocoders weave in/out of the track.
